As can be the case when a government official schedules a visit, more important pressing business must come first. Sacramento City Chief of Police Sam Somers, Jr. sends his deepest apologies that he will not be able to attend our meeting on October 8th but instead has asked Deputy Chief Mike Bray to step in. Mike is a newly promoted Deputy Chief who just recently assumed command over the K-9 unity, a unit near and dear to ESR's hearts, along with his other duties.
Mike was recently in charge of the Police Information Unit which is highly involved in community outreach and the Nextdoor.com program. We look forward to his presentation on October 8th so make sure you attend and bring a potential new member.
1. The board approved new bylaws for the East Sacramento Rotary Foundation which calls for a a board of directors consisting of the President and President Elect of East Sacramento Rotary and 3 members at large serving staggered terms.
2. The board appointed board members Marsha Vacca, President of East Sacramento Rotary, John Lionakis, President Elect of East Sacramento Rotary, Laura Pajak, 3 year term, Dan Cairns, 2 year term, and Bob Deeering, 1 year term to the Board of Directors of the East Sacramento Rotary Foundation.
3. The board approved a budget for the current Rotary year that is to be presented at the Club Assembly on October 1, 2014.
4. The board approved the awarding of honorary membership to East Sacramento Rotary to those people in the community that both have made a difference and whose schedule makes it difficult to be a member. A number of eligible candidates and approved discussing the concept with those candidates to determine their interest.
5. The membership committee discussed the concept of a corporate membership to the club and determined that there were not enough details to bring it to the board. This will be discussed at a later meeting.
"President Marsha Must Not Be In Too Much Trouble"
Assistant Governor (and District Governor Nominee) Barbara Tracy introduced District Governor Fred Teichert for the Governors annual visit.
Fred donned his “Teichert” hard hat and shaped his remarks using the “Build” theme. He challenged us to continue to work toward alleviating or solving a problem that we recognize can be dealt with. Fred noted that Rotary talent and support led directly to the formation of the Boys & Girls Club in Downtown Sacramento, a program that directly helps single parents and their kids. He also encouraged us to focus on support for veterans and suggested they could be supported through job fairs, mentoring, etc.
Fred also asked us to attend, and participate in, the District Conference in Rohnert Park next April 24-26, 2015. This will be a family-friendly event that will feature a Friday evening at the Charles Schulz Museum. Information on costs and registration is available on the district’s website.
Fred encouraged us to continue to focus on our club and its future. Our club is “venerable” but it has new members who are actively involved in its management. Fred was pleased that all members are involved in at least one of the club’s committees. He emphasized our challenge is to be seen as and remain a “community of leaders” within East Sacramento.
Laughter is also important (it is the “L” in Fred’s “Build” theme). Fred encouraged us to have some part of each meeting devoted to a “fun” thing. He noted the concept to “Do it now” is also important. We need to continue to follow up on service opportunities as they come to our attention. Fred acknowledged and commended us for our support of the K 9 programs of the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office as well as our continued support of the medical clinic in San Quintin, Baja California.
Prez Marsha thanked Fred for his presentation. She announced the club is making a donation to the Rotary Foundation in Fred’s name and she reminded Fred to sign a children’s book that will be donated in his name a local elementary school.
Assistant Governor Barbara then presented the club with the permanent trophy it, along with other clubs in area 6, was awarded for having the best hospitality suite at the past district conference. East Sacramento will have it for several weeks before it moves to another club to share and enjoy.
East Sacramento Rotary had their first of many "Meet Me At the Pub" events on September 16, 2014 at the Hoppy Brewing Company on Folsom Boulevard. All those who attended had a great time. A second event has been scheduled for October 22nd to mark your calendar and look for upcoming details.
Dave Gordon, Superintendent of Schools of Sacramento County
According to Dave Gordon, Superintendent of Schools for Sacramento County and Dave Butler, CEO of NextEd, America's schools are not preparing students for the world of modern work and certainly not for the world of tomorrow's work. They discussed the need to prepare the students of the day for the jobs that are going to be prevalent in the next economy. Not everyone is equiped to go to college and there needs to be a place to educate those for those jobs that need to be manned. The job of our education society is to align education programs and policy to advance the economic objectives of our regional areas. Programs that are being advanced are in the Medical Science and Construction areas with Agribusiness, Health care and IT programs being developed.
Tyler Chew, who graduated from high school last June discussed how business needs to get involved with our young students learn what to expect upon graduation from high school. He explained that our schools are not preparing them and when the students graduate are left to their own survival. Tyler felt very fortunate that he was part of a program with SAFE Credit Union where they opened a branch office at his high school, one of two in the Sacramento area. He ran that branch at the high school during his senior year and through that learned about credit and the importance of good credit, how to balance a bank account, and many other important functions that the average business person takes for granted. Tyler now works for SAFE Credit Union in Placer County and is part of a program that has been developed by that organization to mentor students on the importance of good business practices. East Sacramento Rotary has discussed how we too can get involved in this program.
