Tax & Accounting Minute: The Mystery of the Line - above and below. Adjusted Gross Income used to be at the foot of the 1st page of the tax return, and there was a line afterwards. If your expense is "above the line" then your AGI was reduced, which is a very good thing for many calculations in tax computations. If your expense is below the line, then usually it doesn't give as big a benefit. The "line" moved around a few times in recent years, but the concept is the same.
Announcements: The CRAB FEED is February 24th at the La Sierra Community Center. Tickets are $75. There will also be a cake auction and dancing! Peggy Porter-Honeyman has tickets for us. Carmichael Rotary is sponsoring, so let's all go. Bill Danz is in charge of the cake auction at the Crab Feed if you'd like to purchase a cake or make one for the auction, please contact him. Dick Hall volunteered to use his truck to pick up supplies Friday night from the storage unit and deliver them Saturday morning at 10:00 Feb 24th. Our NEW NAME will change to be the Rotary Club of American River starting in July. Marsha Vacca tells us the District will provide WEBMASTER CLUBRUNNER training on Saturday January 27th at 9:00 am at Encina High School. Registration is available on the District 5180 Website calendar. Tim Hall reminds us that the Oak Park Rotary House weeding party will be March 9th. Richard Olebe went to Uganda for 4 weeks and visited our projects. He met Rotary trustees and WASH managers. We gave $100k from our District. He inspected, took pictures, and will make a presentation for us soon.
Happy Dollars: Dick Hall sold his ranch, which was bittersweet. He put $10 into the pan, and also gave a check for $1,000 to the Action Group Against Slavery. Other happy donors today included Carroll Dudley and Carolyn Curtis.
Speaker Andrea Haverland, the outreach coordinator for the Sacramento Zoo explained that the current zoo was built in 1927 with about 4 acres, and now has expanded to 14.7 acres, the biggest footprint it can be in Land Park. There are 500k visitors annually when they have room for one million. The new space in Elk Grove is 100 acres - 65 for the zoo animals specifically, and 10 acres for parking. There will be event space and a restaurant and bar with a view of the Savannah that's accessible without paying an entrance fee. There will be a mixed species habitat exhibit. UC Davis is partnering with the zoo so we can watch the vets working. Andrea would like us to attend the Planning Commission Meeting in April, and on May 8th asks for support at the Elk Grove City Council Meeting where the vote will be taken to accept the new zoo in Elk Grove. The plan is to break ground in 2025 and open in 2029. The remaining Land Park facility belongs to Sacramento City and must remain parkland.
