ALS Walk:
We had 2 special guests at the meeting. Kathleen Lionakis and her son Niko were present. Team Lionakis will walk to raise money for ALS in honor of our past president, John Lionakis, who recently passed away from ALS. You can join us to walk on September 17 at Elk Grove Park or you can go to the club’s website and there is a link to donate in John’s memory.
Sunshine Report:
Chris Deering announced the birthday and anniversaries for the month. The anniversaries included both the wedding and Rotary dates.
Fund Raiser:
Fund master Laura missed the meeting but did not leave the glasses behind, so President Amy had to do it unofficially. PDG Bob Deering stepped up and became our newest Bell Ringer. He attended a meeting on slavery and walked out as their new chairperson.
Bell Ringers for 22-23 year: Hanns Haesslein, Maria Mengotti, Jack Kimmel, Kim Walker, Don Brodeur, Bill Watson, Carol Dudley, Peggy Porter Honeyman and Bob Deering.
Children’s Literacy:
This month’s Rotary theme is Basic Education and Literacy. Tim Ribotta, who is the Director of Education for the Pacific Charter Institute spoke to us about children’s literacy. He provided some alarming statistics about what happens if children are not reading at grade level by the second grade. They rarely catch up and are more likely to be incarcerated or on government subsistence as an adult. Tim provided us with the steps that schools must take to ensure the students are reading at grade level.
