DG Karen Cendro made her annual district governor visit.  She has been at the club a few times earlier, but this was her chance to let us know what to expect this year.  Assistant District Govenor Steve Turner was also present as well as District Foundation Chair Joe Scheimer. 

 

Here theme is Serve It Up.  Karen and her husband are foodies and her theme is based on dealing with food insecurities in our district.  Some of the areas where we can help is with the food bank, community gardens, greenhouses, Youth (FFA, 4H), helping get food from the farmer’s markets to the food banks an CalFresh outreach.   As you know, we have built 2 greenhouse in the last few years, one at Tahoe Elementary and one at VA McClellan.

 

Karen has a Food Initiative Project.   There are 3 steps:

 

Karen’s district conference will be May 5/7 in the Sacramento area.

 

She also addressed the recent news of Polio being detected in New York.  This case was not from the wild virus but rather from the live virus in the oral vaccine.  Most developed countries no longer give the oral vaccine.  There is a community in New York that does not receive vaccines due to religious reasons.  

 

Karen tasked President Amy with selecting someone in the club to be the “Top Chef”.   Karen did not give Amy any criteria for the award.   Since we have one member who is always doing the cooking for the club, whether it is for the YWCA, K-9 facility or the Sac State tailgate parties, Amy selected George Gomes.   George received on of Karen’s prized apron.

 

Karen signed the paperwork for a $25,000 district disaster relief grant for Ukraine.  The funds will be going to the Rotary Club of Kiev to distribute.

 

Club Foundation chair Bob Deering and DG Karen passed out some Paul Harris fellow awards. 

Among those receiving recognition were Hanns Haesslein and Maria Megotti who received the PH+5 awards.  Carrol Dudley and Tim Hayes were mentioned because they will receive recognition at the District Foundation dinner for becoming Major Donors.
