Thought - Today is Juneteenth. The word is a portmanteau, blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others: June and Nineteenth. Gordon Granger was a career U.S. Army officer, and a Union general during the American Civil War, where he distinguished himself at the Battle of Chickamauga. Granger is best remembered for his part in the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battle of Chattanooga and for issuing General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, further informing residents of and enforcing Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which set all Confederate states' slaves free on January 1, 1863. June 19 is now commemorated by the federal holiday of Juneteenth since 2021. It is like our second Independence Day.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests - Speaker Mike Pereira, Contractor Jose Garcia, Jay Boatwright a Construction Manager from the Point West club, Allison Fritzsche and Sue Hayes, spouses of our President and President-Elect, and Joe Scheimer.
Awards - Jim gifted our server Brittany 3 Starbucks cards, and recognized our Membership Chair Sandi Sava, and our bellringer and often our Sergeant At Arms Dick Hall. Tim Hayes was honored as our Rotarian of the Year and given a beautiful wall plaque.
Happy Dollars - Kevin Wilcox bought a boat for the lake at Coeur d'Alene. Lewie Donhost enjoyed his time at the fellowship rally in St. Charles Missouri. Tim Hayes gave $5 because Jim didn't dance.
News -
Joe Scheimer stood with Richard Olebe. Richard's project began with a price tag of $175,000 but there was not enough in the District Designated Funds to make it work, so the project was downsized, and today it was finalized. Our club will contribute $3,000+match toward the project.
Keith McBride talked about the District's Polio Plus Society, encouraging us to donate $100 per year. He has forms to sign up, or we can donate electronically online at the District website. There are only 16 cases left in the world now: 8 in Afghanistan, and 8 in Pakistan, all wild polio cases.
Tim Hayes reminded us that June 30th is the last day to turn in membership payments.
George Abraham asked for volunteers to help clean the kitchen at our Oak Park Rotary House on June 29th at 11:00 AM. Jim Fritzsche and George will do it.
Jay Sedlak reported on the success of the 44th Easter Seals Golf Tournament. There were 124 golfers, and about $85,000 was raised in tandem with Pacific Coast Building Products, who put in $40k. Amy Ruggles encouraged us to come to the Confluence/Demotion party June 29th at 5:30 at Northridge Country Club.
Tony Marques is moving to Nampa Idaho and will miss us all.
Speaker - Mike Pereira started with a joke. Someone asked him "did you lose your phone?" No, Mike said he did not. Well, the person was sure he had. He held up his phone and said, "see, it says 10 missed calls." Mike Pereira is a former American footballofficial and later vice president of officiating for the National Football League (NFL) and currently the head of officiating for the United Football League (UFL). Since 2010, he has served as a Rules Analyst for Fox Sports, for which he has gained the nickname "Mikey RuleBooks." He entertained us with stories of his experiences with players, coaches, and the changes that football has gone through in recent years.
