Thought of the Day – Lewie Donhost reminded us of the 3 important dates in November. The first was yesterday, when we voted. The second is Friday, when we honor our veterans. The last is Thanksgiving Day. (It is also Amy’s birthday)
Poinsettia Fundraiser – Tomorrow is the last day to order Poinsettias. Call Jim Fritsche if you need some.
Bowling – Sandi Sava made a last-minute appeal for those wanting to join the fun at Country Club Lanes for a bowling event. It starts at 1:30 on November 19.
Rotary House Clean Up – This Saturday is the clean-up at the Oak Park Rotary house. We will start at 9:00 and should be done by 11:00. Please bring tools to clean up the leaves and weeds. The address is 4070 2nd Ave, Sacramento. This is a few blocks from the UCD Medical Center.
Children’s Receiving Home – We had a successful dinner with the children Friday. The next event will be on Dec 2. ESR will be sharing a Christmas Party with these kids. We will be giving each kid a high-quality backpack, among other things.
Salvation Army Bell Ringing – Bell Ringing is back. Bill Watson announced that we will be ringing the bells on December 17 from 8am-5pm at the Bel Air on Arden and Eastern. Bill will have a signup sheet at the next few meetings. Bill did not announce what President Amy will be required to do if we exceed the club’s goal. In the past, we have had President’s do everything from kissing a pig to wearing suggestive clothing and dancing on a bar at one of the local watering holes.
Club President – President Amy announced that Hanns Haesslein has accepted the nomination of the past presidents to be the club president in the 25-26 Rotary year. The nomination will be voted on by the club in December.
Tailgate – Lewie Donhost showed us pictures of the successful tailgate party at Sac State. The Chaplaincy was there with the mobile command center that the Rotary Clubs donated.
Clothing and Diaper Drive – Maria Mengotti announced two upcoming drives. One is collecting women’s clothing and the second is diapers for the students at American River College. Details will be forthcoming.
Raffle – Allison Hamaker won the raffle, and the prize was a bottle of wine that she donated to the club. She gave the wine to our speaker, Jim Quinney.
Rise Against Hunger – This week’s speaker was Jim Quinney with Rise Against Hunger. Jim is a Rotarian with the Passport club. Rise Against Hunger’s goal is to have a world without hunger. We have volunteered in the past to help pack food packages to be shipped to other countries. Jim gave an example of a project in the South Sudan. They shipped 9 months of food to a village. They then showed them how to take their land, that they didn’t think could support food, and grow food. They sent an agriculture expert to their village and showed them how to plant to get the most efficiency and how to make liquid fertilizer. They have now grown food on 270 acres out of a 500-acre field. The now are supplying 75% of their villages food with a goal of being 100% sustainable by next year. Nearby villages are now asking how they did it and Rise Against Hunger is going to assist.
