Club Bulletin

Our AV folks were back so that meant we had music to play.  President Elect Jim Fritzsche added Sargent of Arms to his duties.  Bud Walker let the pledge of allegiance.  
 
Guest: Carrol Dudley introduced Heather Story from the Rotary Club of Granite Bay.
 
Happy dollars:  No Laura, but President Amy still made a killing.
 
Keith McBride was shown on the big screen at Golden One Center.   He was part of the chorus for the Andrea Bocelli concert.  He negotiate his fine down to $50.  
 
Bud Walker threw in $120.  $100 for a reference he got from a member and $20 to celebrate his and Kim’s anniversary
 
PE Jim got a slightly used BMW series 4 convertible and contributed $100.
 
Peggy Porter also threw some money in but I wasn’t sure what for.
 
Carolyn Curtis joined us on Zoom.   Her treatment at Stanford for Multiple Myeloma was so successful that for the first time in 10 years she is not on chemo and is in full remission. 
 
Bell Ringers for 22-23 year:  Kevin Wilcox, Chris Deering, David Jones, John Brown, Hanns Haesslein, Allison Hamaker, Maria Mengotti, Jack Kimmel, Kim Walker, Don Brodeur, Bill Watson, Carol Dudley, Peggy Porter Honeyman, Bob Deering, Keith McBride, Marsha Vacca, Randy Smith and George Gomes.
 
Club Social:  This month’s club social is Friday May 26th at Allison Hamaker.  So far the signups are light, so if we don’t get more members signing up, we may have to postpone it.  Let Chris Deering know if you are planning to attend.
 
RLYA: We have 3 students confirmed for RYLA.  There is still an opening for one more student.
 
Board Meeting:  This month’s board meeting is cancelled, but the next one on May 20, will be held at Rudy’s Hideway.  President Amy is treating the board to lobster.
 
Fundraiser:  We have only sold around 50 tickets to the fundraiser.  We need all members to encourage friend to attend.   We also need more auction items.  Let Tim Hayes know if you can donate anything.   We are trying to get everything posted online and it will take some time to do it.
 
St John’s Program for Change:  St John’s sent a letter thanking the club for our recent project where we painted 2 offices and replace the flooring.
 
 
 
Paul Harris Fellow:  Foundation Chair Bob Deering presented a PHF to Rachel Gotlieb with the Crocker Art Museum.  Rachel is a leading expert on ceramics and was instrumental in getting an exhibit at the Crocker on ceramics.
 
 
Speaker: Our own Bob Deering was the speaker on “A World Without Slavery”.  Through Bob’s efforts, Rotary has make an effort to control the slavery movement in the US.  Bob is chair person of the Rotary Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS). (The latest bulletin from RAGAS will be sent as a separate email.
 
Bob told about how he got involved in the fight against slavery.  Trafficking is the second only to drugs as the largest crime activity in the world.  Most people don’t realize that Sacramento is a hotbed of trafficking in the US.  Children 12-14 years old are especially vulnerable. 
 
Through a RI and district grants, $400,000 was spent in the Sacramento area to fight this through education our children.  
 
What can we do:
  • Learn the signs
  • Be the leader in your club and develop projects
  • Know what to do if you believe an incident is taking place
  • Make a difference
 
Raffle: Who else but Carrol Dudley won the raffle.
 
New Week’s Meeting: Kimberly Key with the Sacramento Boys and Girls club will tell us about her organization.
