We were back singing at our meeting.  This was despite members attempting to bribe Randy Smith to break the sound for the beginning of the meeting.  We even suggested that President Amy could raise money for the club by allowing members to bid on not starting the meeting without the music.  She didn’t even respond to the request. 

 

Happy dollars:  Keith McBride was happy that he got to work with Kip Johnson at the St. John’s painting project.  I am not sure it that meant that Kip was great to work with or he was happy he didn’t get stuck with Tim Hayes or Hanns Haesslein, who painted the other room.

 

Randy Smith gave $20 because he was happy he finally got his rental house work completed.

Painting:  Kip thanked Keith, Tim and Hanns for their work to paint 2 offices at the St. Johns Program for Change.  The day of the meeting the new flooring, that the club paid, was being installed.

 

 

Food Bank:  8 Rotarians worked at the River City Food Bank on Saturday and served over 400 families.

 

Rotary House:  The family has moved out of the Oak Park Rotary House and so we need to clean it before the next family can move in.  We have volunteered to take the 9-10 am shift this Sunday, April 23.  If you can help, please let President Amy know.    The Big Day of Giving is coming up soon.  The Rotary House gets a few thousand dollars during this day.  If you no someone that is interested in donating to the house, please remind them of this day. 

 

Club Social:  This month’s club social is Saturday, April 29 at the Watson’s home.  Kelly and Bill will be cooking steaks and proving wine.   They need a head count so they know how many steaks to provide.  They are also asking for help in providing side dishes.  Let Bill or Chris Deering know if you are attending.

 

Fundraiser:  Tim reported that we have received 2 donations for the silent auction.  PE Jim Fritzsche has donated a round of golf for 3 and lunch at Del Paso Country Club.  Sean Stafholm has donated 4 wine baskets from Napa with a value of $250 each.  Please notify Tim Hayes if you have items for the auction.

 

Speaker: Lisa Culp spoke about her organization, Women’s Empowerment.   If you remember, we donated clothes to them earlier this year.   Women’s Empowerment works with women and children who are homeless.  They help with workforce development and affordable housing assistance.  They have 4 9-week programs each year.   They provide free onsite childcare.

 

No drug or alcohol usage is allowed.   86% of their clients have experienced domestic violence.  

 

It costs $2,000 per person for the 9-week program and the children cost them another $1,100.   Our club is making a financial donation to this organization.   The average wage earned after 3 months of graduating is $19.96 per hour.  A one-bedroom apartment in Del Paso Heights requires someone to make $33.75 per hour to be considered affordable.

Raffle: Maria won the raffle.  We were pleasantly surprised that Carrol Dudley did not win.  However, after the meeting, Sargent of Arms, Keith McBride, realized that we forgot to include Carrol’s tickets in the bowl.
