Our tables were lined with pumpkins.   We had a request from the North Highlands Parks and Rec asking if we could help them purchase some pumpkins.   They have the kids decorate them for Halloween.  George Gomes contacted Perry and Sons Farms in Manteca.  He roomed with one of the Perry’s at Cal Poly.   They said we could have them if we picked them up.  George drove to Manteca yesterday and picked up 350 pumpkins and delivered them to the parks department. 

 

Foundation chair Bob Deering announced that we were in the top 3 of district clubs in dollars donated, dollars per capita and polio plus giving.  Bob, Randy Smith and Tim Hayes were recognized for major contributions to the foundation.

 

The can foods that all the clubs gave were on display at the dinner.  DG Karen Cendro has only been to half of the clubs but collected 3,200 pounds of goods. After the dinner, Karen asked if we could help bring some of the cans to the River City Food Bank.  We delivered over 1,000 lbs to them.

 

Amethyst accompanied the Gade’s on a trip to Reno.  Besides drinking and gambling, Amethyst got to go to the Reno Air Races with Betsy and John.  

 

 

 

Our own PE Jim Fritzsche was the speaker of the day.  He gave us some history of the Pantheon in Greece.   It was originally built to honor Athena but later became a Catholic Church and then a mosque.   When the Turks occupied Greece, they used part of it as an armory.  During one of the battles, the armory was hit and exploded.   

 

For hundreds of years, the Pantheon sat in ruins.   Lord Elgin of Britain received permission to remove the statues and carvings.  Lord Elgin spent the next 4 years shipping them to London.  They reside in the British Museum.  Greece has been pressuring the British government to return them.   Great Britain claims that they paid for them, and Lord Elgin had a document signed that gave him permission to remove them. 

 

It was a very interesting talk about antiquities and who owns the rights to them.
