Pres. Amy opened the meeting as normal, singing, pledge, 4-Way Test and thought for the day.   Guests today were our speaker LaMills Garrett, NAACP, and Aimee Lily Lazaraus, a newcomer to East Sacramento looking at Rotary.

Poinsettia Fundraiser - Peggy reminded us to get out and sell those poinsettias!  Refer to flyer sent to us earlier from Jim Fritzsche.  Orders due by Nov. 10.  Delivery on Nov. 29.  Please plan to pick up your order and the orders of from your contacts at The Money Brokers, and make arrangements with your sales contacts to either pick up or you deliver.  

 

CSUS Tailgate on October 29, 2-6pm. Sign-up sheet for potluck food sent around the room again.

 

Meeting at K-9 Training Facility, Nov. 2 we will meet at the K-9 facility.  They want to thank us for all the support we have given them.  Plan to be in attendance.  You won’t regret it!

 

Children’s Receiving Home dinner with the kids, Nov. 4 at Round Table Pizza, Watt & Whitney.  Come join in the fun.  This is a very special time for the kids and they so look forward to dinner and play time with us.

 

North Highlands Children’s Fall Event was last Saturday.  We donated 300 pumpkins, thanks to George Gomes and others.  Was a huge success!

 

River City Food Bank last Saturday was successful.  Six of our members worked the provide food for 375 families, 1,700 individuals.  Our workers were Keith and Kathy McBride, Lewie Donhost, Hanns, Bob and Chris Deering.  Dictionaries were made available and were quickly taken.

 

Service Project to come - Watch calendar for dates.  Rotary House Cleanup - 4-8 needed.  Women’s Empowerment spring cleanup, St. John’s project, Tahoe Elementary School Dictionary delivery.

 

World Polio Day - ESR Project for Polio is fundraising (aka cash/checks please) will be pledged to Foundation Chair Joe Scheimer for his End Polio Now Ride in Tucson in Nov.  If we reach $7,500 Joe has promised to wear a purple and green wig for a month.  Come on,  we all want to see this!  Donations to Bob Deering asap.

 

Program -  In the absence of Betty Williams, President of Sacramento Chapter of the NAACP, LaMills Garrett shared with us the mission of the NAACP.  LaMills is the Political  Action Chair. He told his personal story of growing up in a mostly white community, integrated experience growing up, and was mostly ignorant of racial division.   As an adult, felt the commitment to advance the status of all black African American people.  He joined NAACP to make a difference.  They are 100% volunteer organization, working to bring communities together, advance the public image, promote family values, public intervention, education, outreach to young people.   They are a non-political organization.  They work to bring dignity to all.  Hummm…..  Sounds like Rotary to me!   

 

We were reminded that we each must challenge the negative public images we see and work to present a more honest positive message.

 

Lamond, a great message today.  We were enlightened and encourages to actively work to develop a stronger relationship between NAACP and Rotary, especially ESR!   Consider joining NAACP and supporting their activities.

Raffle - Carroll Dudley was the lucky winner.  He immediately picked up the bottle of wine and delivered it to LaMills in thanks of his time and message.

 

Halloween – President Amy wants us to dress up for next week’s meeting as we celebrate Halloween.  Bill Watson, this doesn’t mean you wear your best suit.
