Thought - Our president Jim Fritzsche visited the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. We stood for a moment of silence to honor those who have died in our service.
Tax & Accounting Minute - Jim talked about red light cameras and how his new cars warn him in time, saving his family money. He reminded us that EAs, CPAs, and tax attorneys all follow a code of ethics that keep them and us out of trouble, kind of like his car warns him about red light cameras.
Happy Dollars - Bill Watson celebrated his anniversary. Dave Jones celebrated his vacation in Lake Tahoe and his successes at work. Lewie Donhost was also happy today.
News - Joe Scheimer announced that our new Polio Plus Warrior is Keith McBride, and honored him with a special Polio Vaccine dollar coin.
Speaker - Sacramento's 46th police chief is Kathy Lester. She was introduced by Marsha Vacca. Chief Lester thanked us for starting the K-9 facility in 2007. This is police memorial week in Sacramento. Tomorrow there will be a ceremony in Woodlake Park. Sunday there's a candlelight vigil at Capitol Mall after a convoy comes across the bridge from West Sacramento. Saturday night there's a bike ride named Code 3 for a cause, and the cyclists will ride from Sacramento to Westminster in Orange County. During the pandemic, there was a spike in crime, and Sacramento received a federal grant providing assistance from the ATF and DEA. This last year the police department seized 3,000 illegal guns, and we had a 30% drop in homicide and a 40% drop in violent crimes. We have a challenging homeless problem. One third of the felonies and one third of the misdemeanors are due to the 5,000 homeless living in the city. We've cleaned up 150,000 lbs. of trash and fielded 600 311 calls. To deal with it, we have an "incident command" of police/fire/city services. Affordable and available housing is a priority, but we cannot enforce our way out of the homeless situation. The police are working to improve morale in the ranks and in the community with their focus on service. Recently they implemented Spider Tech, which gives feedback and follow up to those who call the police. It also conducts follow up surveys. Last month there were 1,500 responses to the survey questions. The main complaint was the length of time for police to respond. Our district will be split, meaning officers will have less travel time, and more time on the call. They will get to know the community better and will stay on the beat. Supervision will be tighter, with 4-6 on a team, not 9 officers. The city police are struggling with staffing. If we know anyone who would like to be a records clerk, a dispatcher, a community service officer, or a police officer, they are hiring. Members of the club asked questions about the CSUS protests of the Palestinian/Israel war, illegal immigration, and human trafficking.
