The Rotary Clubs of Arden Arcade, East Sacramento and Point West joined forces in a six-month project to donate more than $20,000 to develop a Technology Room at Encina Preparatory School.  "When the community embraces a school, powerful things happen for the students and their learning," said San Juan Unified School District Board President Pam Costa. "We have seen that today with Rotary's gift to Encina. We truly appreciate their long-standing support for the students and staff at Encina, and the opportunity that Rotary is helping provide for our students."

Rotary Unveils New Technology Room at Encina High

Rotary Clubs of Arden-Arcade, East Sacramento, and Point West recently unveiled a state-of-the-art technology room at the school.

“One of Rotary’s guiding principles is to give back to the local community,” said Arden-Arcade Rotary Club President Joel Archer. “We could not think of a better way to give back than providing students the tools to succeed in life.”

The funds were used to change an aging classroom into a state-of-the-art Technology Room that includes interactive capabilities between the students’ laptops and large screen in the room. Among the items purchased with the donations were more than two dozen computers, charging stations, a large screen television, desks and computers.

“Rotary is committed to helping out schools in underserved communities like Encina,” said Point West Rotary President Richard Graber. “The students, the staff and the community are proud of the great educational opportunities at Encina but the school simply does not have the same resources as other schools in the county.”

Aside from the cash donations, the Rotary clubs worked together to clean and paint the technology room and replace the blinds and other items that were broken. In addition, the clubs assembled the desks and worked to ensure that the room was ready for students on Monday morning.

“This was a collaborative effort, said East Sacramento Rotary President Marsha Vacca. “Without our combined efforts, we would not have been able to make this project happen.”

Located in the San Juan Unified School District and serving the Arden-Arcade community, Encina Preparatory 6-12 High School has an ethnically diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged student body with nearly 90 percent of its students receiving free or reduced lunch. Students of color comprise more than 80 percent of the student population, and 40 percent are English-language learners. Encina strives to ensure all graduates are academically qualified and intellectually prepared for college and career.
