President Sean Wall opened the meeting with 30 seconds of silent gratitude reflection followed by members singing My Country ‘Tis of Thee and the Idaho State Song, and then reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our very own Andy Erstad brings a particularly unique perspective to the Idaho State Capitol. As Chairman of the Idaho State Capitol Commission—and the Commission’s only licensed architect—Andy has been involved with the Capitol since 1998, when the Commission was created to develop and oversee the master plan for the building’s restoration, renovation, and long-term preservation. His architectural expertise and firsthand involvement in the extensive restoration and expansion project that culminated in the Capitol’s rededication in 2010 give him an unusual depth of knowledge about both the building’s history and the decisions behind what visitors see today. As we tour the Capitol, Andy can help connect the architecture, history, preservation efforts, and practical challenges of maintaining this historic building as the working “people’s house” of Idaho.
On October 22nd, we’ll have our usual meeting during the first half hour, then walk over to the Capitol. The tour will take at least an hour in order to cover all the important highlights and will run past 1:00. If you need to leave early, that’s OK. Because Andy needs to provide the Capitol with an accurate headcount, please email Allison (at gilbreaths@gmail.com) by Oct 1st to reserve your spot(and that of your guest if applicable). We hope you’ll join us for a special visit to the Capitol!

Rotary Minute
Treasurer Bruce Mills gave a financial report, including contrast between expenses and income. To survive, the income must be increased above expense. Rotarian Bea Black moved to accept Bruce’s recommendation to increase dues by 71 cents per WEEK (to overcome shortfall) and to continue the conversation about club finances. The motion passed unanimously.

13 years ago, the Training Tower (TT) was condemned, so a new one was needed
Qualities of TT include heat, smoke, stress, and decision-making
Problems with live training are lead (in paint) and asbestos (in fiber-board)
2013 bond appeal failed, but in 2014 city approved $17 million for new construction
By 2018, the Fire Training area grew to a 15-acre campus.
