Please join us at the Lahaina Jodo Mission or on ZOOM, for our next meeting on Thursday,  19 August 2021 at 11:45 am.
NOTE 1:   Join us this coming Thursday at noon.
NOTE 2:   Lunch will not be provided.   Please bring your own brown bag lunch, snacks, and drink.    The meeting will be in the covered Pavillon, with the beach / ocean in the background.    Social distancing will be observed  and parking in the Mission lot is available.
NOTE 3:   On Thursday, 12 August 2021,  PP Joe Pluta (also President, West Maui Taxpayers Association) updated the Club on a proposal to add runway lights at the Kapalua Airport that could be used in emergency situations, when night time operations become necessary for public safety.
Discussions are on-going with the State Airport Authority.  The County Council will also be briefed on the issue, with the potential for major cost savings as such an improvement could result in federal funding.   The Kapalua Airport is the only State airport that presently receives no federal funding.
NOTE 4:    On Thursday,  5 August 2021, Rotarian Joanne Laird,  Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF) Maui Representative, updated us on their scholarship program for this coming year.    Since its inception in 1977.  HRYF has awarded oner $7 million in scholarships.    This past year,  Catlin Baclay, Lahainaluna High School Class of 2021, won one of two S10,000 scholarships awarded to applicants from the 52 Rotary Clubs in Hawaii.
NOTE 5::   On Thursday, 29 July 2021,  our former member, Angus McKelvey (Hawaii State House of Representatives) updated us on actions ongoing at  the Legislature .    We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the next phase of the Lahaina By-Pass  (northbound) was moving forward despite the loss of tax revenue (legislature moved the funding from tax based to bond based).  Stay tuned for additional information.
NOTE 6:   On 22 July 2021, Rotarian Rian Takeshita, MFD,  talked to us about the proper use and care of home fire extinguishers.   Nothing can be as devastating as a fire in your home or other properties.   Knowing how and when to safely use a fire extinguisher can minimize damage, while you are waiting for the Fire Department.
NOTE 7:   At our 15 July 2021 meeting,  Assistant District Governor Mariko Higashi was our Guest Speaker.   She updated us on Rotary's Rescue Tube Project for our West Maui beaches.   Topics included repair of the existing tubes and plans for the monitoring and continued maintenance of the tubes.   With only two lifeguard stands on the West side, rescue tubes can save lives.
NOTE 8:  At our 8 July 2021 meeting, Dr. Wayne Nishijima, UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (Retired) was our guest speaker.    During his tenure Dr.  Nishijima, a plant pathologist,  was an Associate Dean of the College and a County Extension Agent.   His talk was about "What's Wrong With My Plant; Where Can I Get Help".    He concluded his talk by providing contact information for the College's Maui Office [phone:  (808) 244--3242 x 222 or email: kahului@ctahu.hawaii.edu] , should any of our members need assistance with their plants.
NOTE 9:  As COVID restrictions are easing, visiting Rotarians are WELCOME.    Please join our meeting at the Jodo Mission Lahaina.
If you can’t join us in person, please visit our Zoom Meeting this coming Wednesday at 12:00pm!
