Dick Osen gave a thought for the day on perseverance, while President John Lemmon (Knox, Lemmon & Anapolsky, LLP) officially opened the meeting and led the pledge.

Meeting sponsor President-Elect Diane Woodruff gave the floor to Jackie “Semper Fi” Kirkwood (Goodwin Cole Company), who discussed issues faced by many of the 785,000 women who have served in the military since 9/11. Women veterans face a higher unemployment rate and are twice as likely to be homeless as their male counterparts, and VA hospitals across the country are ill equipped to treat women. Spotlighting these problems will hopefully lead our society toward remedies.
Bobby Reed of Capitol Tech Solutions was welcomed as the newest Rotarian in the galaxy. Bobby was sponsored by Kathy Herrfeldt (Home Care Assistance), who introduced him, and by Ted Kappel (Kappel Mortgage Group). In addition to running a fast-growing business with his MIT skills, Bobby is a devoted dad to three kids and is highly involved in their activities. Welcome aboard!
President John announced that longtime club member Mead Kibbey had been hospitalized, and Mead would surely welcome your cards and calls.

- District 5180 has organized a Bike Ride on May 6 Bike Ride from Folsom to Scott’s Seafood on the River. Please see the Rotary Office for information about participating, or check out the District website.

- The club’s annual swim BBQ at the Bartholomew/Brautigam residence is set for August 5
- Just six seats are left for “An American in Paris” theater night on May 19, announced organizer Allison Cagley (California Musical Theatre).
- Jackie Kirkwood and Christie Holderegger (Volunteers of America) reported on the club service project held last weekend, which refurbished a house for seven homeless veterans – it was a great turnout by the club with outstanding results.

Tina Reynolds (Uptown Studios, Inc.), who won 2nd place in a banana cream pie-eating contest, donated toward her “Nancy” Mulligan. Bob Gaines chipped in $1,000 to the Foundation for its work in Ethiopia. Jon Snyder (Snyder Commercial Real Estate) donated in recognition of his 30-year anniversary in the club.
Day chair Laura Heintz (Stanford Youth Solutions) introduced guest speaker Scott Moak, the Vice President Community Affairs, Game Entertainment & Production for the Sacramento Kings. Scott is a native who grew up in the Pocket and graduated from UC Davis. Before joining the Kings, he worked at the Sacramento Children’s Home and other local nonprofits. Scott talked about his long journey as a local announcer before landing his dream gig in 2002. In Q&A, Scott talked about the NBA’s view of games as entertainment “shows” rather than just basketball games, and he recalled two favorite moments in his career – the opening of Golden 1 Center and the first game after Vivek Ranadive bought the team, saving it from relocation.
