Paul Stone on the piano and Lights of the City by Journey (courtesy of J.D Dannenfelser from J.D. Entrprises) welcomed Rotarians as they entered the first meeting of President Dan’s hairless era.  Official greeters were Kathe Nathan (The Merchants National Bank) and Jim Culleton (Strong & Associates).  Norm Marshall (Headwaters Construction) supplied the wine for the pre-reception.  Big thank you’s went out to our set up committee John McIntyre (Mercy Foundation), Ted White (Sacramento Delta Property Management) and Art Breuer.  Fred Teichert (Teichert Foundation) led us in the invocation.

Sergeant of Arms, Tom Bacon (Kidder Mathews), introduced three guests Kathryn Turn of KVO Holdings Tom Amoruso of Wells Fargo and Suzette Riddle of CSUS.  He also included our guest of honor / speaker District Governor Barbara Tracy.

Susan Sheridan and Todd Andrews (Andrews Construction) led a humorous recap of our biggest fundraiser, Sacramento Century Bike Ride.  Susan included photos and believe it or not human hair!  She returned the locks to the brave souls who went under the razor for St. Baldrick’s.  Walter Dahl (Dahl Law, Attorneys At Law), Mike Bullington (Pacific Advisors), Kevin Smith-Fagan (KVIE) and President Dan McVeigh seemed a little more streamlined than usual.  Kudos went out to all of the volunteers.  Friday check in and Saturday morning set up were labor intensive but the Rotarians pulled it off.  Mark your calendars for October 7, 2017.  It just keeps getting better….

Jim Leet (Boutin Jones Inc.) recognized a few Paul Harris and Eddie Mulligan milestones for Art and Kiefie Breuer, Len McCandliss, and Dan McVeigh.  Jim Craig also recognized Brian Van Camp (ADR Services, Inc.), just because.  Bob Daly (Financial Network Wealth Advisors) was given a new unsung hero award called, “Hands that Serve, Hearts that Care.”  It came from the District for his tireless dedication.

President Dan introduced a new meeting feature- a short round table discussion regarding “Why do you like Rotary?  Why did you join Rotary?  Each member of the selected table stood and recounted their initiation year, a short anecdote and warm stories that produced more than a few laughs.

Announcements:  Nancy Teichert (Writer) pumped up the Walk for Literacy on October 15th.  John McIntyre reminded everyone that tickets are going fast for the Kings game on November 20th, where he and the “Four Way Test” will be singing the National Anthem.  President Dan mentioned the District Foundation Dinner on October 22nd.

Fred Teichert, as chair of the day introduced our speaker.  District Governor Barbara Tracy emphasized her theme this year, Feel the Power in 5180.  She introduced the International President John Germ of Tennessee, and Brad Howard Rotary Director from Oakland, CA via a few slides.  She also included her husband Jim, a fellow Rotarian.

She outlined her goals for the year. 1) Expand The Rotary Vision and Experience.  2) District Training and Conference in Santa Clara, Ca on May 5-7, 2017. 3) International Convention in Atlanta, GA on June 10-14, 2017.  4) Finish Polio Plus.  Unfortunately, new cases in Nigeria have placed that country back on the list with Pakistan and Afghanistan as the only 3 countries with polio incidents.  5) Membership: her task force will reach out for Attraction, Engagement and Retention.

She also wants to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Foundation (She honored Jim Leet with a pin, as he is our Foundation Chairman) A Rotary family picnic on May 20th, 2017 will introduce families, children, and Rotarians with no agenda, other than to have fun.  She also addressed Human Trafficking in our region and what we can do to fight against it.

Barbara concluded with a short video promoting the conference in Santa Clara and introduced her husband, Jim.  He is holding “Jim’s Zany Photo Contest” and wants entries from our club.
