The Dan McVeigh Era has officially started!

Joe Grant (Northwestern Mutual Advisory) and Silvia Fitzgerald (AAES (Antiques, Appraisals & Estate Service) were our designated greeters.  Todd Andrews (Andrews Construction) generously donated the wine reception and in full bicycle regalia promoted his Sacramento Century ride.  Aaron French (Zanker Recycling), Kevin Williams (KVIE) and JD Dannenfelser (JD Enterprises) conducted the music throughout the meeting.

Mik Miklaus (Integrity Mortgage) gave us the “Thought for the Day” and announced prayer is back. If you have the desire to give a future meeting a blessing, please contact the Rotary office.

Tom Bacon (Kidder Mathews), our Sergeant at Arms announced numerous guests.

Rotary announcements included Dick Osen promoting Golf 4 Kids, remember tee signs these tend to be the best fund raisers for us and give the most bang for the buck! Again proceeds will benefit local schools serving the physically impaired. Sac Century will have the sign up genius in full force in the next week or two. You can sign up to be on the race crew or the Capitol Mall crew.  Both are needed and fun!

Many Rotarians were very generous, last meeting raised over $4000.  Today was no different.

Financial donations have been made by some of our generous members like Gretchen Eischen (Community 1st Bank) got it started by “getting jiggy with it” ….her words not mine.  Bob Gaines in his son-in-laws name, Todd Andrews, for all of the great Sac Century work.  Dee Hartzog in honor of the speaker of the day Sara Krevens.  Ron Crane (DCA Partners) rappelled down a building and celebrated by donation.  Judy Payne in memory of Oleta Lambert. Art Breuer forgot Keifie’s birthday and paid in honor of his bride!  They have been married 61 years.  Steve Ruland and President Dan McVeigh went back and forth on RUOFS, the cow’s name…and both made a donation.

Jodi Davis of Sutter Medical Foundation introduced Sara Krevans, President and Chief Executive Officer of Northern California based Sutter Health.  Sarah has degrees from UC Berkeley and Boston College.  She was director of Maine’s Medical Services at age 29.  She returned to California, taking a job with Kaiser.  In 1999, she moved over to Sutter rising to COO and has been in her current position 6 months.  She also was a former director for Sierra Forever Families and the “Make A Wish Foundation”.

She is big on “listening”. She has blocked out 50% of her time to interview patients, employees, other health care workers, even the night watchmen.  She is trying to learn how to deliver better care. What she did find was hope and opportunity. In a world that is sometimes a dangerous place, Sarah is proud of the job Sutter has been doing, but will not rest on her laurels. It is an $11-billion-dollar company. There are 55,000 employees.  The equivalent of 3 kindergarten classes are born every day at Sutter.

Sarah is trying to drill down into healthcare to it’s very essence. “Is this experience going to be the very best?”  She and Sutter serve not only patients but the community. People want healthcare differently. Her 24-year-old son’s needs are very different than her 88-year-old mother.  And they obviously interact, differently with their own doctors.

We spend more on healthcare per capita than any other nation yet we still have infant mortality rates and a socio economic disparity in how medicine is distributed. Sarah is trying to foster better partnerships. Air/Ambulance, non EMS transports, secured video visits to name a few. Three new retail walk in clinics have just opened in Elk Grove, Roseville and Natomas.  Hopice is also progressing.

Sarah then hosted a lively question and answer session peppered with good commentary from our Rotary crowd.

Bacon Bits closed the meeting with a prompt to get involved in YIP, it could change your life!
