Last meeting...
President Beverly's Last Luncheon and the First Day of summer!

It was a day of firsts and lasts - to toast President Beverly and her last meeting (with a little bubbly if you arrived early enough at the "wine station" – Thank you Pat), and the first day of summer. The room was full including some members whom we hadn't seen in awhile. Mary Healy provided a poignant thought for the day that fit nicely with today's theme of laughter and humor. Bruce Hester provided a great summary of the projects in which the World Community Services Committee is currently engaged. Too numerous to mention, please contact a WCS committee member for more details. Dean Jacobs and John Wood spoke about the "Ludy Langer Spirit Award" as a way we all can participate in our dear-departed Ludy's legacy. And PP Hal forked over $300 as the meeting sponsor to sit at the left hand (not the right) of President Beverly, and after speaking about divorce, informed the crowd that he would be a "Dude" forever!
Committee announcements began with a very articulate and poised young woman, Natasha vonKaenel, who will be one of our RYE outbound students this fall, to Denmark. PP John Frisch reminded us to sign up for President Beverly's demotion to be held next Monday, June 28th; and be sure to make your blood donation before the end of the month so we can win the blood drive contest with Point West.
Madame President took a few minutes to provide a quick thumbnail of her year by first acknowledging and recognizing the Board of Directors. A significant highlight of the year are our 51 new members. She mentioned many successful events such as wine dinners, mystery trips, Firesides and Happy Hours. Look for her quarterly report with more details on all that we have enjoyed and accomplished during her tenure. Kudos were extended to PP Diane Mizell and co-chair John McIntyre for an outstanding list of speakers; and more kudos to the club membership for the $62,000 that was donated this year.
Shelton Duruisseau introduced our speaker of the day Jim Pelley.  Jim has worked as a stand-up comedian, a writer for Saturday Night Live in the early days, and now uses his talent conducting "Laughter Works Seminars" for businesses and large corporations.  As the 5th, and most treasured child, Jim had many opportunities growing up to watch and learn from his family, and thanked his Mother for her gift of humor and how she handled awkward situations with laughter. He poignantly asked – do you want to "be right or be happy?" Also consider – what if you loose the recipe for ice cubes?
Jim's sense of humor is very entertaining….all delivered in a wholesome and very funny way. He acknowledged the role of social ridicule and how effective it is in Rotary.  Jim got the endorphins flowing throughout the room and everyone left on an "up" note from a very enjoyable meeting and a most successful year.
President Beverly has lead us through some challenging economic times with class, attention to detail, excellent leadership, and most importantly - laughter and humor.  - ATD
