Inside Sacramento!

Sacramento never looked so good. The glossy pages of “Inside Sacramento,” the 200-page book published by Cecily Hastings are filled with photos of the faces and the businesses that make Sacramento the place we all love.
“This book represents the soul of Sacramento,” said Hastings, who with her husband and business partner Jim publish a portfolio of monthly newsmagazines featuring various neighborhoods with a monthly circulation of 80,000. “These are the places that make Sacramento unique.”
Since the book’s release in the fall, 5,000 of the 7,000 printed have been sold. It highlights “the most interesting neighborhood places in America’s Farm to Fork capital” including 101 locally owned restaurants and shops that sell everything from toys to hardware.
The travel guide was a collaborative effort that cost $75,000 and was financed with contributions from the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mark Friedman of Fulcrum Property, the East Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, The Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce, several business associations and community leaders.
Sacramento has been an underrated destination for too long, she said. The book features the iconic neighborhoods of Downtown, Old Sac, R Street, Midtown, the Handle, Land Park, Oak Park, and East Sac.
Hastings edited the 25,000 photographs taken by Aniko Kiezel and Rachel Valley down to 1,000. Reporter Jessica Laskey wrote the articles. People who buy the book should consider themselves ambassadors for Sacramento, she said, using the books as professional gifts to advertise the community. Who knows, she said, maybe your adult children who have moved away will realize what a cool place the city has become and move back!
As she ended her speech, Jim Hastings raised his hand and urged her to tell Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s suggestion that we use it as a bucket list of places to visit in Sacramento and then pass the book along to someone else. The book sells for $34.95 online at InsideSacBook.com, but she donated $10 of that for each book sold at our meeting to our Rotary Club of Foundation.

The wine reception was provided by Bonnie Plummer (National University) and J.D. Lauppe (CPA Investment Management). Aaron French (Zanker Recycling) provided music. Solis provided the thought of the day. Winston Eddy was applauded as a new member, sponsored by Hester.
President Dan reminded members to sign up to attend the District Conference May 5-7 at the Marriott in Santa Clara. Roy Alexander (Children’s Home) announced next theater outing is “Phantom of the Opera” on May 27 followed by “Beauty and the Beast” on June 23. Mike Bullington (Pacific Advisors) said there will be clay target shooting on Saturday. Katherine Van Diest, whose Clarksburg club will be chartered next month, invited everyone to participate in the clean up of the race trail by Miner’s Leap where the AMGEN Race will be filmed. Clayton Lee (C.K.L. Trust) said our club will start doing international goodwill projects with other clubs.
Roasts and Boasts were numerous: Becki Roberts (Central Valley Community Bank), honored as a woman of influence in real estate, became a friend of President Dan; PP Jon Snyder (Snyder Commercial Real Estate), gave $100 in honor of his son James will star in the Beast in Beauty and the Beast at Music Circus on June 20; PP Thom Gilbert (Gilbert Associates, Inc.) gave $200 toward the Clarksburg trail clean up; Linda Geery (Gilbert Associates, Inc.) pledged $300 for her 30th wedding anniversary and first grandchild; PP Fred and wife Nancy each pledged $100 for he and wife Nancy who took a Disney Cruise with the family and presented President Dan a Mickey Mouse backscratcher; Hester presented him with a bust of King Tut from his cruise on the Nile with wife Elfrena Foord (Financial Planning), Pam Saltenberger (Girl Scouts) and PP Susan Sheridan, Randy Friedman (United States Navy) gave $100 in admiration of Foord’s electric car; Todd Andrews (Andrews Construction, Inc.) donated $100 in honor of Katherine Van Diest and Jay Lowden (Nonprofit - YMCA) became a friend of President Dan because of his daughter’s scholarship and graduate teaching position.
