After eleven years in Sacramento I am still amazed at what a "small town" flavor there can be.

Case in point this past Monday and our speaker.  Before the meeting I had read through Professor Mary-Beth Moylan’s bio page at the University of the Pacific - McGeorge School of Law website.  I thought she sounded like a great speaker on the eve of a general election, but not much more.

I can't begin to tell you my surprise and delight to see "Simone's mom, Mary-Beth" come walking in the door and being introduced to me as our Speaker.  My 7 year-old son Kai, and Professor Moylan's daughter Simone played on the Land Park Pacific Little League Yankees T-Ball team together this past summer.  Kai and Simone became good friends.  In fact, Simone was part of Kai's birthday party festivities as we went to the River Cats.

This is just a vivid reminder that we all have several constituencies and each group will know us for different traits.  For the Rotary Club of Sacramento I am the current President (and long for that coveted title "Past-President.")  At St. John's Lutheran Church I am the Senior Pastor.  For Ms. Mazon's first grade class at Theodore Judah Elementary School I am Kai's dad.  I am also Kai's dad when it comes to his soccer team or T-Ball team.  In other settings, like around American River College where my wife is the current president of the faculty, I am Dr. Sorensen's husband. All of those descriptors are correct, and I am a little bit of each of them at all times.

All that is to say that Rotary is but one place where we are able to find fellowship with one another and share a common value of service above self.  And while we are not always at or with other Rotarians, we are still Rotarians whenever and wherever we may be. So do not be surprised when you find your path intersecting with others and while today there may not be a Rotary connection, it won't be long until there is one.

Have a great week.  Celebrate well the World Champion San Francisco Giants.  And be a good Rotarian even, and especially when you are playing one of your other roles.

President Scot
