Current Public Safety Concerns
President Dan McVeigh gave us our call to order and briefly recapped a splendid District Conference in San Jose, CA. A big thank you for the Wine Reception courtesy of Jerry Haley, Also, a thank you to Musical Director Kevin Williams (KVIE) & Aaron French (Zanker Recycling) Our greeters were Joe Grant (Vantage Points, LLC), Linda Geery (Gilbert Associates, Inc.), Susan Sheridan. Our Thought for the Day was delivered by Tanya Kravchuk (Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento).

President Dan welcomed our new member; Elizabeth Cassin - Medical Services – Sponsors were Jeanne Reaves (Jeanne Reaves Consulting) & Elfrena Foord (Foord, Van Bruggen, & Pajak). Elizabeth is from Southern Ireland, raised with five siblings, she pursued an Econ Degree in London, and a Masters/PHD in France. She will be a welcome contributor to our endeavors.
Jim Leet (Boutin Jones Inc.) introduced our recipient for the Service Above Self Award: Detective David Jones of Citrus Heights Police Department, who started his career in 2006. He has been involved in Police Activities League and has logged countless volunteer hours for the department. His passion is making the community better for children. He has created an eight-week all-inclusive leadership program, which addresses conflicts in daily life.
District Conference recap by Diane Woodruff & John Lemmon (Knox, Lemmon & Anapolsky, LLP) had everyone wishing they had gone and will be sure to sign up for the next one.
Club Announcements: President Dan’s Breakfast will be held on 5/26. RI Foundation Dinner in Folsom on 5/20. Mystery Trip was introduced by Shadi Fox (Dick James & Associates) & Jack Anderson (Dick James & Associates) on June 3rd. Buses leave at 9:30 AM, return at 3:30 PM, the limit is 34 people, and the price is $95 per person.
Roast, Boast & Toast was led by Elfrena Foord in honor of Elizabeth Cassin. Laura Heintz (Stanford Youth Solutions) will be rappelling down a building, the Residence in on 15th Street! Come see her and cheer her on. Tanya Kravchuk & Jaclyn Kirkwood (Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento) were front-page news during the Big Day of Giving. “May the 4th be with you” had a Star Wars ring to it. Chair of the Day, Judge Kim Muller (US District Court) introduced our speaker - DA Anne Marie Schubert (District Attorney, Sacramento County)
DA Schubert reviews 45K cases per year, and files 25K cases per year. Half of these cases are felony and half are misdemeanor. She is engaged in community outreach programs and legislative advocacy. Her youth academy exposes Sacramento students to all aspects of police, judges, DAs and the probation department. Within her organizations there are 400 employees, 100 volunteers, 175 attorneys, investigative/police officers, a crime lab and victim advocates. She showed a flow chart of the various departments. She emphasized public safety issues facing our community.
A few Assembly Bills and Propositions were referenced that have an impact on DA Schubert’s daily routine and future.
AB 109 - Realignment - Homelessness and Mental Health Issues which are much more prevalent
Prop 47 - Touted as Safe Schools Act - Basically makes felonies into misdemeanors
Prop 57
Prop 64 - Legalization of Marijuana - local control
Schubert concluded by praising her departments DNA work and the conviction success. Her goal is to get a DNA Conviction of East Area Rapist. He has been linked to 12 murders in Southern California too. She is collaborating with South California officials. The DAs office does put bad people in jail, but a huge part of their effort is general public safety, fostering community service and maintaining a safe environment.
