Author of TigerFish
Mar. 27, 2018
Why I Wrote TigerFish TigerFish: A Memoir of a South Vietnamese Colonel's Daughter and her coming of age in America By Ms HoangChi T Truong I started writing my memoir in 1992 with the sole purpose of passing down my family history to my daughter (and son who was born a year later), to tell how vastly different my life had been compared to the lives they were living. I wanted them to know how I survived the Vietnam war and successfully fled the communists at the fall of Vietnam in 1975, my ensuing journey in acculturation and assimilation in America, and how I eventually met their father. It is a story that must be told, a story that's been tugging at my heart, my soul, and all the fibers of my body. It's not a "want" to tell this story, but a need and a must-do life's goal of mine. As time progresses and the political situation has changed with the Syrian refugee crises, this has given me another compelling reason to publish my story now, in order to raise awareness of the refugee experience. No refugee chooses to be a refugee. We do not choose to upset our lives, ripping out our hearts and souls, leaving all that we knew and loved for the unknown. Rather, we do what we must do for our survival and the survival of our children, because it is a basic human need and drive to perpetuate our family's heritage and legacy. Today, I'm sad to see the refugee crisis playing out repeatedly all over the world, and strongly believe that not only is it necessary to share my narratives, but it's unequivocally my obligation to pass it on as part of this country's oral history. My life came full circle and I served for three years at the California Office of Emergency Services as the GIS Chief, leading and providing real-time online maps for response and recovery of disasters, manmade or natural. I served the demographics of the misplaced, the needy, and the distressed, who were refugees of disasters, whether they fled their home from fires, earthquake, or flood. In sharing my story, my ultimate message is of compassion, love, and understanding through learning what it means to be a refugee. I invite you to join me in creating a kinder, more compassionate world by learning what it means to be a refugee, reading TigerFish, a Memoir of a South Vietnamese Colonel's Daughter . With heartfelt gratitude! Hoang Chi Truong |

President John, Latoya and I visited a home in South Sacramento last week that houses seven Military Veterans. These Veterans are in a program for no or low income residents. The home needs some repairs and cleaning up. We have a plan to paint and clean up two rooms of the house and hope to make this a larger, future project. We can make a huge impact, but we need your help! I am sending this email to you since you joined Rotary within the last two years! We want to get to know you better and for you to have a chance to get to know other newer members all while making a difference in our community. This is one of the many reasons we joined Rotary so lets get out there! Mark your calendar for April 21 from 9am - 4pm. I look forward to working together on the project with you! Jackie Kirkwood Thank you! |

Dear Rotarian, Please join us as we welcome Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn as our guest speaker at the Rotary Meeting on Tuesday, May 1, 2018. We are expecting a large turnout for Chief Hahn's visit so we are asking you to please RSVP below and include guests so that we will be prepared. Below is a short Bio on the Chief. On August 17, 2017, Daniel Hahn was sworn in as the new chief of the Sacramento City Police Department. Chief Hahn, who had been Roseville’s chief for six years, previously worked in the Sacramento Police Department for 23 years. Sacramento’s first African-American Chief of Police points to an unusual upbringing by his mother in a nurturing community as sources of strength that will enable him to fix the city’s broken police department. Many hope that Dan Hahn will be able to build trust with law enforcement and eradicate racial bias in the police force. As we all know, Chief Hahn is currently dealing with many challenges that have arisen after 2 Sacramento City policemen shot Stephon Clark. We are lucky to have Chief Hahn speaking with us to share how he is dealing with these critical issues facing our community. |
