A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF CHAGUANAS

The Rotary Club of Chaguanas had its genesis in a simple and informal meeting between Rotarian Saty Seemungal of the Rotary Club of Port of Spain West and Mr. Jugmohan Seemungal, a prominent businessman of Chaguanas, in March 1984. Discussions at that meeting explored the feasibility of establishing a Rotary Club in Central Trinidad.

At subsequent meetings, the idea of the formation of this Club, the Rotary Club of Chaguanas, was pursued and at meetings Rotarians from the Port of Spain West Club shared information on the objectives, philosophy, history and worldwide outreach of the activities of Rotary International, the parent body of Rotary Clubs and the Rotary family. A Provisional Club was subsequently formed in April 1984 with the Rotary Club of Port of Spain West as the sponsor Club.

On January 21, 1985 the Provisional Club was accepted by Rotary International and was granted and a RI Charter Certificate as issued to the Rotary Club of Chaguanas with Rotarian Jugmohan Seemungal as the Charter President and twenty-four (24) other named Charter Members. Two of those Members, Past Presidents Bill Ramrattan and Dean Mohess are still very active in the activities of the Club.

The Club’s Charter celebration function was a grand occasion held at Farrell House Hotel, Pointe-a-Pierre with His Excellency Sir Ellis Clarke President of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago delivering the feature address and presented the Charter Certificate to Charter President Jugmohan “Jay” Seemungal with the other Members in attendance. The function was also an occasion for family and friends of the members and a cross section of the business community of Chaguanas to interact in fellowship.

The Club, since then and with the support of the community has grown in strength of spirit, aspiration and commitment with its fluctuating membership providing various charitable services to the Chaguanas community and environs.
