President's Chat
Steve's Chat 12
Hello all,

Due to a combination of holidays and family commitments numbers were down a little for this week’s meeting.

Our guest speaker was Shaun Miller, Manager of economic development & investment at Warrnambool city council.   Shaun gave us a brief history on the regions ability to withstand economic downturns because of its diverse business structure. Then went further to state that as patents had lapsed our regions innovation had been poor, therefore Warrnambool needed an innovation ecosystem.   Something that allows entrepreneurs and start-ups to collaborate and connect to enable their businesses to grow.

This solution needs a physical centre where ‘best practice’ can be shared through mentors and corporate partners.  But a regional network is also needed to conquer the Great South Coast geographical enormity. A platform for start-ups to leverage stakeholders for commercialisation.

Without support start-ups fall over.

Support is critical to any entrepreneur’s success, and these support networks are notably absent in most standard regional business communities. The tyranny of distance, weak telecommunications, a lack of experience are all working against entrepreneurs in regional areas.

The New UNEARTHED program will facilitate a collaborative alliance, bringing together the right people, organisations, spaces and virtual tools in our location to create a cohesive start-up ecosystem that is more accessible to more people.

  • Create density from sparsity – bring together regional communities, unlocking power and support in numbers.
  • Share the costs of marketing the program, attracting mentors, connecting with investors and others.
  • Have a tested template for success.
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders.
  • Leverage existing regional programs.
  • Share knowledge and support across ecosystems.
  • Establish self-sustaining ecosystems and broadcast yours to the World.

Key Outcomes
The long-term aim of the program is for the Great South Coast to create an “innovation hotbed”.

The following have been determined as the key measurable outcomes which depict success:

  1. Enabling jobs. New jobs and new industries.
  2. Harnessing more of what we have. An abundant investment approach to the natural resources, assets, businesses, opportunities and ideas within the Region.
  3. Measurable growth. Concentration of investment attraction within the Region.
  4. Retaining and attracting talent. Enabling of opportunities for young people and skilled experts to remain in/come to the Region.
Export growth. Exponential increase in export growth nationally and internationally.

Chris Preston had some fun during the fines session by showing photographs from a club meeting at Figsellers in 2003, including a group photograph of the 2003 Christmas meeting.

On Sunday we sponsored and supported the Annual Parkinson’s Walk event held at the foreshore.  Seven members assisted with the setup, packup and cooking whilst those from the support group, and members of the public, went for a walk.  Keep your eyes out for the Warrnambool Standard in coming days, I am led to believe there were record numbers in attendance.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

An elderly pastor was searching in his closet for his collar before church one Sunday morning.

In the back of the closet, he found a small box containing three eggs and 100 $1 bills.

He called his wife into the closet to ask her about the box and its contents.
Embarrassed, she admitted to having hidden the box there for their entire 30 years of marriage.
Disappointed and hurt, the pastor asked her, "Why?"

The wife replied that she hadn't wanted to hurt his feelings.
He asked her how the box could have hurt his feelings.

She said that every time during their marriage that he had delivered a poor sermon, she had placed an egg in the box.
The pastor felt that three poor sermons in 30 years was certainly nothing to feel bad about, so he asked her what the $100 was for.

She replied, "Each time I got a dozen eggs, I sold them to the neighbors for $1."

An Irishman and an Englishman walk in to a bakery.

The Englishman steals three buns and puts them in his pockets and leaves. He says to the Irishman, "That took great skill and guile to steal those buns. The owner didn't even see me."

The Irishman replied, "That's just simple thievery. Come with me and I'll show you how to do it the honest way and get the same results."

The Irishman then proceeded to call out to the owner of the bakery shop, 'Sir, I would like to demonstrate to you an impressive magical trick." The owner was intrigued and so came over to see the magic trick.

The Irishman asked the owner for a bun and then ate it. He asked two more times and, after eating them, the owner said, "Okay, my friend, where is the magic trick?"

The Irishman said, "Look in the Englishman's pockets."

A man took his wife out to a very expensive restaurant.  the meal arrived and the husband tucked in with gusto.
The wife asked " Darling aren't you going to say grace? you always say grace before every meal at home."  the husband replied," No, because the Chef here knows how to cook !"

My friend's father is so proud of his family of 6 children.
He frequently referred to his wife as, "Mother of Six,"
much to her annoyance. Finally, she cured him of his habit.
At the end of a party, he called out loud enough for everyone to hear, "Ready to go, Mother of Six?"

"Anytime you are," she replied, "Father of Four."
