Weekly Meeting –We had a bumper attendance at this week’s meeting to hear our guest speaker Jessie McConnell who is on the planning committee for RYLA. Jessie was a very confident and engaging speaker and spoke of the benefits of participating in the RYLA program. She is calling for participants for this year’s program which will be held at the Kangaroobie camp in Princetown in the week prior to Easter. They currently have twenty-five participants enrolled for this year’s personal development course but can double that number if interested people are identified. Participants should be between 18 -25 years of age and must commit to the full program which is six days. For further information or to nominate a participant please contact Janey Preston. Daybreak member Drew Giblin followed Jessie’s talk with a fun session that asked the audience to guess several business logos as he showed parts thereof. A fine ensued for Chris Preston who was not the first to identify his own logo for Preston Windows! It was a clever idea by Drew, who sourced several logos relating to members of Daybreak and their businesses or employment. We also had a slide show of pics from the fishing trip to Portland last weekend and heard some funny stories that occurred over the weekend. It seems to be the consensus that future trips not be named the ‘fishing trip’ as once again the seas were rough and Serge left his boat at home. By all accounts it was a very enjoyable weekend and I’m sure there will be another planned next year. We welcomed Ian W back to our meeting this week following his recent bike accident. Ian seems to be recovering well but took another slight blow when he was fined for falling off his bike! Future Guest Speakers and Fun Sessions – Listed below are the guest presenter and fun session roster for the weeks of February and into March. The rostered members are to either give a presentation or to organize another guest speaker. Remember that it can be just as interesting to hear the life story of one of our members, so don’t be too shy to speak about yourselves as it gives our newer members an insight into who you are and your life journey. Please advise me in advance if you have organized another speaker for your rostered session. March 11 – Andrew Suggett, Fun Session Mehul Patel March 18 – The Soup Kitchen Committee (Jenny Turner), Fun Session Chris Preston March 25 – Max Taylor, Fun Session Janey Preston April 1 - Mr Adee-Jonathan Davidson, Urological Surgeon (Barry Brooker), Fun Session – Jan Read April 8 – Children’s Day – Easter theme April 15 – Membership Assembly Foundation and Centurion donations – There has been an urgent call out for increased donations to the Foundation and in particular through the Centurion Program. Cheryl briefed the members on the particulars of donating and how the Centurion donations come back to the district through funding rounds. It seems that the donations across Australia have been in rapid decline hence the callout. The Centurion Program donations are linked to the awarding of a PHF. Secretary Cheryl has this week sent out information to all members along with the appropriate forms if members wish to donate. Clean up Australia Day – As previously notified and due to other commitments Daybreak were unable to join other community members at the usual Clean Up Australia Day on March 1. Alternatively Glenn has organised with the Council that Daybreak members do their clean up two weeks later on Sunday March 15. The meeting place will be our usual location along Aitkins Road and the boys from Clontarf will be joining us for the cleanup. Hopefully we can organize a social get together at the conclusion of the clean up. District Conference – The District Conference is fast approaching and will be held from March 20-22. It looks like we have several members attending which is good for Daybreak. The booking links can be found on the district website, including tickets for the dinner and light show. Easter Meeting – Our meeting prior to Easter on Wednesday April 8 will be open to children and we will have an Easter theme. There will be a contest for the best Easter bonnet with an adult section and a children’s section and prizes. Who knows, the Easter Bunny might even make an appearance! Get in the spirit and hop along to the meeting. Membership Assembly – Our weekly meeting on April 15 will take the form of an Assembly based on Membership. Membership is the biggest issue facing Rotary and other Service Clubs worldwide. We are asking all members to make a special effort to attend this assembly and to bring to the discussion any ideas you may have to increase membership, ideas on a membership night or social event and any names of prospective members within our community. Whilst we do have a Membership Committee, membership is actually the responsibility of all Club Members. We look forward to your attendance and a healthy discussion on increasing membership and moving our Club forward. Bunnings BBQ 2020 – We have been notified by Bunnings that as Saturday April 25 is ANZAC Day we will not be able to sell food and drinks to the public till 1pm. Bunnings have requested that we cook from 11.30 to 1pm but in that time period sausages and drinks will be free to the public; Bunnings will purchase the food and drinks for this period of time. Daybreak will set up a donation box if customers wish to make a donation during the ‘free’ period. Daybreak members are happy to comply with these requirements. Group 5 Social Day – Rotary Club of Port Fairy are hosting a Group 5 Social Day on Sunday May 17. More details will be circulated as the program develops but please mark this date in your diary as it is sure to be an enjoyable day. It provides great opportunity to network with the other Rotary club members within the Group 5 district including the Rotary Club of Portland and the Rotary Club of Portland Bay. Foundation Movie Night – Sue has confirmed the date for our next Foundation Movie Night which will be Thursday May 21 at 7pm. I am Woman which focuses on the story of Helen Reddy and the impact of her iconic song, especially on the feminist movement, is our selected movie. We will be asking members to sell tickets when they become available as this will be a major fundraising event for the Foundation. Birthdays and Anniversaries – We wish Lydia a very happy birthday for Sunday March 8 which falls on International Women’s Day. We also congratulate Chez on her 20th anniversary in Rotary celebrated on March 1. Well done Chez.
