Hello Daybreakers,
 
At this week’s meeting we held an assembly for approaching Service projects and a separate forum/workshop on membership discussions/events. Some of the outcomes were:
Service projects
  • 3 Christmas Markets at civic green.  Selling books, Timboon ice cream, Andrews art work.  Looking into Foundation gift certificates
    • Seeking books from other tree Rotary Clubs
  • All Summer Markets and Movies will be attended – No changes to food sold
  • Australia Day will also be attended -
 
Membership Forum
 
Names and contact details of potential members will be collected.
An invitation to a Friday social catch up on February 15th 2019 at the Mid City. A drink on arrival and some nibbles will be provided. Depending on how many do attend we may do a presentation on our projects.
Corporate memberships will be sought. Bendigo Bank will be approached now.
Members are asked to provide at least one name to follow up.
 
We held the Club AGM this week, the highlight being the election of the executive office bearers for the Rotary Year 2019-20.  Those elected are:
            President                   –         Liza McCosh (Nominated/Elected 2017-18)
            President Elect         –         Peter Cassady
            Vice President          -          Chris President
            Secretary                   -          Cheryl Bellman
            Treasurer                   -          Jan Read
 
My thanks and congratulations go to Armour Beardsley, the Mortlake community and our Service projects team for their fundraising efforts on Sunday.  A strong donation will be made to Australian drought relief programs, Ian Harper may have an update for us at this week’s meeting.
 
Planning is underway for the Club Christmas party being held at Glenn and Ree Rundells on Saturday August 8th.  Please talk to Alison and Jan to assist with coordinating the catering if you can. (see attached flyer)
 
The last club meeting for the calendar year will be our Christmas meeting held at Andrew & Betty Sugget’s on Wednesday December 19th.  Catering will probably be from McDonalds and Subway, Jan will also organise the coffee van to arrive as per last year.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

Two zoologists, one from Czechoslovakia and the other from Russia had been studying the grizzly bears and their habitat in the northwestern US for a number of years. They had kept in contact with each other over the years and were looking forward to the day that they could actually come to the US and study the bears in person.
 
Finally the day came and they gathered their belongings and headed to Yosemite Park. Upon their arrival, they spoke with the rangers on duty and were sadly informed that they would not be able to scout for the bears as it was mating season.
 
They were heartbroken and pleaded with the rangers who eventually gave into their request. The rangers led them to an area they thought would be safe and told them that they would be back in the morning to check on them.
 
The next day the rangers return to find the campsite in shambles with two sets of tracks leading away. They follow the tracks and sure enough find a male and female grizzly, both gorged. The bears begin to attack and the rangers put them both down.
 
They cut open the female and find remnants of the Russian inside. At this point, one ranger looks to the other and says, “You know what this means, don’t you?” and the other replied, “Yup, the Czech’s in the male!”
