President's Chat
Steve's Chat 21
Hello Daybreakers,

Our guest speaker this week was Ann Morris who spoke to us about Diabetes and the “Insulin for Life” organisation (IFL).  Ann spoke at length on the types of diabetes but also on the objectives of the IFL program.
I found Ann’s talk very interesting, especially when she mentioned the amount of insulin that was wasted globally.  So, I decided to find out a little more, this is an outline of what I found out online:

  • We are becoming a drug dependent society, there are thousands of drugs being produced globally.  Clearly, we need to consider what happens to medicines we purchase but often don’t actually use.
  • Many unwanted and expired medicines in the community that are disposed of via general waste or sewerage end up in landfill sites this can lead to:
    • Damage to the environment.
    • May also be found by unintended recipients including children and animals, increasing the risk of poisonings and abuse.
    • Medicines discarded down sinks and toilets enter waterways damaging marine life
  • In Australia Insulin is amongst one of the most commonly discarded medicines and approximately 75% of all discarded insulin is in-date when discarded
  • There are many people across the world that need insulin, but they cannot access it because it is either unavailable or unaffordable.
For people with diabetes, Insulin for Life (IFL) provides another option. By sending unused and unexpired supplies to IFL, this medication can used to save lives.  IFL sends them to developing countries they are then distributed, free of charge, to those who require them.

Our guest speaker on Wednesday 31st will be Anne Jane, Anne will be updating us on the Warrnambool College Kalay Program.

This week’s meeting also coincides with Halloween, who’s getting dressed up?

The Warrnambool Clontarf Academy will be holding its presentation evening on Thursday November 15th.  For those available to attend please see the following invitation.

A reminder that this Thursday we are holding a joint club “End Polio Now” movie fundraiser at the Capitol Cinema.  This event is sold out, that’s around 300 tickets sold.  A fantastic result, thanks to all that have assisted Sue.

The following link is to a great article on what must be done to create a world without Polio.

Surfside Program Report

Good evening everyone.

We had 4 males and 1 female attend this afternoon. One regular and 4 newcomers.

The regular had a shower and washed his clothes. There were 5 loads of washing done and 4 dryer loads. The top left dryer swallowed $2 extra as the money jammed in the machine. I have told Paul so hopefully it will get fixed. Beware next week. We spent a total of $21 which will be refunded next week.

Steve cooked some snags and Liza brought some turkish delight (yummo!) Cheryl brought some bikkies.

The girl took a hygiene pack and some clothes, and was very grateful.

Thanks to Steve, Liza and Chez for giving up their afternoon.

Cheers

Glenn

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

Will glass coffins become popular?

Remains to be seen.

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his  father as to when  they could discuss his use of the car.

His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades  up from a C to a  B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair  cut.
Then we'll talk about the car."

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've  observed that you have been studying your Bible, but  I'm disappointed  you haven't had your hair cut."

The boy said,  "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my  studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John  the Baptist had  long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that  Jesus had long hair."

Dad's reply!

"Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?

A New Age Church opened about thirty  minutes drive from my house so I decided to go and check it out.

It was a rough area with a high crime rate but the people were very friendly and welcoming.

The Pastor approached me three times during the service and placed his hands on my head, each time repeating " You will walk, You will walk, You will walk."
I kept telling him there was nothing wrong with me that I could walk

By golly that Pastor was right. When the service was over and I went outside my car had been stolen.

Two atoms are walking down the street. One says, "I think I lost an electron.

The other says, "Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm positive."

A high-school student came home from school seeming rather depressed.

"What's the matter, son," asked his mother.

"Aw, gee," said the boy, "It's my marks. They're all wet."

"What do you mean 'all wet?'"

"I mean," he replied, "below C-level."
