Hello Daybreakers,

Given my President’s Chat 19 April 2023 it was quite suitable to hear from our club member, Gerard Lourey talk about Rotarians Against Malaria with Global Action Group. As I discussed in my President’s Chat last week Malaria is an epidemic problem in Tanzania. It is quite a problem in the sub - Sahara region of South Africa.

The World Health Organization report in 2021 identified an extra 47,000 deaths occurred due to the Covid interruption. The 2030 targets had also been disrupted. The Malaria epidemic centres used to be China and El Salvador who are now apparently Malaria free. Timor Leste have achieved being Malaria free.

We were reminded between 40,000 and 80,000 children a year die in South Africa and children under 5 in particular are more vulnerable due to their poor immunity. Kenya, Ethiopia and the regions of East Africa seem to have ongoing issues with Malaria.

UNICEF identified a child under 5 would be dying every minute. The introduction of a Malaria vaccine first generation vaccine was encouraging and again bed nets were continued to be one of the tools to combat Malaria. It appears a lot of the tribal village’s resistance and education being the number one requirement to encourage people to take the vaccine.

Again, in some of these regions, resistance is always initially a problem but working in conjunction with Polio eradication it has been a much smoother transition. Partnering with Polio plus great achievements have been made. Natural herbicides are being used opposed to industrial. It appears to be an extract of a flower to be used to eradicate mosquitos.

In Nigeria through Polio Eradication 1.2 million have been vaccinated and similarly Malaria nets are being distributed at the same time. Other health issues are detected which is Polio Plus programs.

I would like to thank Gerard to introducing this topic to the Club. I would also like to thank Peter Smid for attending the RYLA dinner on 20 April 2023 on behalf of our club and the importance of supporting our candidate Charlotte Cosens.

Our Race Meeting with East Warrnambool Rotary Club is happening on 3 May 2023 and we are rapidly approaching our Long Lunch fundraiser on 21 May 2023. It was very pleasing to see that our ticket sales have increased and I encourage all members to continue to promote the Long Lunch to reach our target ticket sales and make it a very successful fundraising event for our club. It will be one of our final fundraising events for this Rotary year.

So, Let’s Imagine Rotary.

Your President,
Sergio Bacchetti

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

A friend sent a message to my husband with a photo of himself at the hospital with his
new baby granddaughter.
“What is her name?” I asked.
My husband replied, “Mace!”
“But that is pepper spray,” I groaned. “They can’t call her that!”
My husband put on his glasses and looked again. Turns out her name is actually Maisie!

A drunk staggered down the main street of the town. Somehow he managed to make it up
the stairs to a cathedral and into the entrance, where he crashed from pew to pew,
finally making his way to a side aisle and into a confessional.
A priest had observed all this, and figured the fellow needed some help, so he entered
his side of the confessional.

After the priest sat there in deathly silence, he finally asked, "May I help you, my son?"
"I dunno," came the drunk's voice from behind the partition. "You got any paper on your side?"

The other day when I was on a plane to go on holiday the pilot came out of his cockpit
and started introducing himself to passengers by his first name Pontius. Nice fellow.

Him: For the last 36 years, all you seem to do is find fault with anything I say.

While flying from Denver to Kansas City, Kansas, my mother was sitting across the aisle

Sobbing daughter to her mother: I told him I wanted to walk down the aisle.
He took me to the supermarket:

I received an email for Luxury escapes stating the hottest destinations for the week.
I laughed when they said Paris.

Is it because they keep setting fire to restaurants, cars and rubbish?

I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area, so I went to the lost luggage office
and told the woman there that my bags never showed up.

She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in
good hands.

"Now," she asked me, “has your plane arrived yet?"

I love to read those advice columns in the newspaper. I read
one this morning. It said, "What's the worst thing a wife
can get on her twenty fifth wedding anniversary?"

"Morning Sickness."

Did you hear about the two guys who decided to try duck hunting?
They bought new outfits& equipment, and went out to a place in the woods
where they heard the hunting was really good. But after several hours of
thrashing through the woods, one fellow said, "I don't know about this.
We've been out here all day and haven't caught a single duck.
Do you think we're doing something wrong?"

"I don't know," replied the other. "Maybe we're not throwing
the dog high enough."
