President's Chat
Steve's Chat 48
Hello Daybreakers,

This week’s meeting was well attended by 22 members and one guest, Pat McKenzie.

After breakfast Pat spoke to us about his Social BBQ project held at Ward 9 South West Healthcare.  The volunteer program runs in the following manner:
  • Once a week two volunteers plus supporting staff hold a BBQ lunch for 20-30 patients/Staff
  • The present electric cooking facilities have been deemed inadequate, out dated and potentially unsafe.  Food cannot be kept warm.
Modifications are required to enlarge the existing brick structure and provide 2 new gas fired hot plates.  Southwest Healthcare are to provide all food and provide ongoing fittings and maintenance.

The cost of new hot plates, fittings, cylinders, bricklaying, lockable cabinet and stainless-steel benchtop etc will be $7980.  Some funding has already been promised by one or two Rotary Clubs.

We have been asked to assist with further funding.  This request will be raised at our next board meeting on May 9th.  Please give me a call, of catch up at next week’s meeting, if you have any questions or feedback you wish to discuss.

During the meeting we spoke about our End Polio movie fundraiser featuring the life and times of Elton John, it’s going to be a fun night on Thursday May 30th.  Get you tickets from Cheryl Bellman ASAP as its sure to be a sell-out.

A number of members attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service on Thursday, followed up by fellowship and breakfast.  I attended the 11 am parade and wreath Laying service, it was great to see so many Vietnam Veterans marching and by all accounts a record number of locals and visitors were in attendance.

Next week’s meeting will be our Annual May Race meeting, so we will hold a joint club fundraiser for Australian

Rotary Health’s Lift the Lid on Mental Illness.  This year we are trying something different, same venue but the morning will be “Hosted” by Warrnambool East.  I look forward to catching up with you on Thursday at the Mid-City, please wear a hat.

On Sunday 5 members of the current board attended the district assembly at Marion College in Ararat.  We all hope to learn a little more while there, with those travelling covering Secretary, Treasurer, Membership/Strategic planning, Foundation, Public Image and off course the important role of Leading our Club.

The planning for a Group 5 social event hosted by the
Rotary Clubs of Portland & Portland Bay on Sunday May 5th
has been locked in. Cheryl circulated an attendance list at
this week’s meeting and around 12 Daybreakers are
attending.

If you wish to attend, please let Cheryl know so we can
update the bus numbers.  The Bus will be leaving from
Flagstaff Hill departing at 8 am Sunday Morning.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy some fellowship
while catching up with friends, meeting
new Rotarians and networking.  I am sure the
Portland Clubs will provide an enjoyable program on the day.
As Karen & I travelled back from annual leave
in Sydney, Chris & Janey were just arriving to
attend the Australian Target Rifle National Championships.

They had a great weekend and Chris & Janey represented
Warrnambool and Victoria strongly with Chris bringing
home a strong result of 7th place overall in the Bench rest event.
Well done Chris!

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

Morris, an 82-year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.

A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm.

A couple of days afterward, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, "You're really doing great, aren't you?"

Morris replied, "Just doing what you said, Doc - 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.'''

The doctor said, "I didn't say that. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur- be careful.'"

A couple of elderly men were venting their frustrations about the woes of modern technology.

"I just can't ever seem to remember my darn passwords," grumbled one of them.

The other one smiled. "Oh really? I can never forget mine!"

"How do you manage it?" asked the first guy curiously.
"Well, I simply set all my passwords to 'Incorrect' so that whenever I'm told that my password is incorrect, I'll remember it!"

John's wife woke up one morning feeling completely deflated.
"My word, I feel like my mind has almost completely gone!"
"Are you really surprised?" John asked.
"Why would you say that, John?"
"Because you've been giving me a piece of it every day for fifty years!"

Two senior ladies were out for a Sunday drive in a huge car. Neither of them could really see too much over the dashboard.

When they came to an intersection, the light was red yet they kept on cruising through.

The passenger thought to herself, "I feel like I'm losing it, but I swear we just drove through a red light."
A few minutes later, they drove through another red light. The passenger was almost certain that the light had been red but was still slightly concerned that she might be going mad, so she decided togive the driver one last chance.

As they were approaching the next intersection, the passenger paid a great deal of attention. This time the lights were certainly red, yet just as before they just sped past.

"Susan!" the passenger yelled. "Do you know we just ran 3 red lights in a row? We could have been killed!"
"Oh, am I driving?" came the reply.

I didn't think wearing orthopedic shoes would help me, but I stand corrected.

How do you lift a kangaroo with one hand? Doesn't matter, you probably will never find a one handed kangaroo anyway.

How do you catch a penguin? cut a hole in the ice, put peas around the hole, when a penguin comes up for a pea, you hit him in the ice hole.
