President Preston’s Prattle...  #12 :  3/12/2023
December Theme: Disease Prevention and Treatment.

Hello Daybreakers,

Guest Speaker:

At our November 22nd meeting, and to align with the 16 days of activism across Australia, we welcomed Dr Beckie Nevin. This Rotary year all the District Governors have agreed to unite with the common cause to Say No to Domestic and Family Violence. Glenn Rundell organised Beckie to come and share with us her role in the southwest as the 1st day of Activism begins on November 24th to December 10th.

Beckie is from an organisation called Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West, her role is Gender Violence Prevention and to promote Awareness and Create Equality.
Beckie shared with us that gender equality is a precondition for preventing violence against women and improving women’s health, rights and choices.
Violence against women is now recognised as a serious and widespread health problem in Australia, with enormous individual and community impacts as well as social costs.

Key Statistics on violence against women in Australia.
1 in 3 Australia Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.
1 in 4 Australian women has experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner.
1 in 5 Australian women has experienced sexual violence.

Did you know that it is 10 years since the official opening of Rotary House.
Our very own Andrew Suggett, the chairperson for Rotary house and is still very much involved with the committee. Andrew with committee members from the 4 Warrnambool Rotary clubs, the then Victorian Premier Dennis Napthine, and Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan

Janey was at the RC Cobden on Thursday night with DG Ian McKay, while there they heard that a Cobden members wife is currently in hospital in Warrnambool, the club member was driving daily to Warrnambool until it has become too much for him, he is now residing part time at Rotary House. This is exactly why the house was built, for the long distance family member to be closer to an ill loved one, and safe commuting.

  Rotary Christmas Luncheon

Sunday, November 26th.
Was a great day with the Rotary Club of Warrnambool joining us as well at the RSL. I’m sure all who attended the lunch had a relaxing time, members did mingle which was good to see, and I heard plenty of laughter which is important for us.

Raffle;

Club member Sue Cassidy handed out the RC Ballarat South Community Raffle tickets to members

Good tip is to sell your tickets early before the community is flooded with the same raffle.
Our club gets to keep $1.60 from each ticket sold. Great 1st prize being a $38,000.00 car. And 2nd prize is a $1000.00 Bunnings voucher.
If only 20 members sold 20 tickets that would make us $640.00. Seems too easy really.

A little of what other clubs around the world are achieving :

Philippines:

With two club leaders being registered nutritionist dietitians, the Rotary Club of Lucena University District takes healthy eating seriously. The club paired with the Quezon chapter of the Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines to offer lessons at a jail on how diet can prevent disease, the importance of exercise, sleep, and drinking enough water, and other topics. Club President Joey Kathlyn Samonte and Past President Bella Castro also explained a food chart on optimal portion sizes for various food groups. And aspiring chefs tested their skills in a cooking contest using the organic vegetables grown at the jail. Club member Jasper Panganiban lauds the pair’s devotion. “These types of projects to encourage healthy lifestyles and diets in the community are close to their hearts,” Panganiban says.

Italy

A rising number of young people with eating disorders prompted the Rotaract Club of Terre Cremasche and the nonprofit Consultorio Insieme Crema to conduct workshops for people ages 20 to 35. Beginning in April, the series covered three topics: body image, mindful eating, and wellness and sustainable dining. The sessions were developed in collaboration with counseling centers and psychologists. “The aim is to guide participants in critically examining their eating habits and the emotional and historical significance of meals,” says club member Emma Prévot. The club funded much of the program with a gala cocktail reception in the town of Crema’s civic museum, housed in a 15th century convent.
