President's Chat
Pres Chat 3/3
This week we welcomed 24 members of Daybreak to our weekly meeting.

President Peter, welcomed all members and guests.
He reported on the Group 5 Presidents meeting. The lockdown has impacted on all clubs and their ability to undertake projects.

Guest Speaker
Our guests included Geoff Wake and Phil James who were co guest speakers.

Geoff spoke briefly about the Brophy Transition To Work Program targeting 18 - 23 year olds. Transition to Work is designed to help young people who are early school leavers or those who have had difficulty entering employment after school.

They operate in Warrnambool, Portland, Hamilton and Colac and are supported by the Brotherhood of St Lawrence. They rely heavily on employers to give young people a go.
Phil spoke about the L 2 P program

The L2P Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), managed by the Department of Transport (DoT), supported by the Victorian Government and coordinated by Brophy Family and Youth Services with the Warrnambool City Council.

There are young people in our community who have no access to a vehicle or a reliable mentor to teach them to drive and are unable to achieve 120 hours of driving practice to apply for a probationary licence.

The TAC L2P Program matches learners from 16 to 21 years old with a fully licenced volunteer driver and practice vehicle to help them gain driving experience.
Before being matched with a volunteer mentor, learners participating in the program have access to up to seven free driving lessons throughout the program with a professional instructor. This helps learners build their skills before getting on the road with a volunteer mentor and continue progressing through the four stages of the Graduated Licensing System.
Not having a licence impacts on their ability to get to work and their social connections with others, and often the public transport system is inadequate for their needs.

The mentors not only support young people to get their licence but can have a significant impact on their lives.

You can support L2P by volunteering as a mentor, through financial support or in kind support. The young person needs to have completed their learner’s permit and the volunteer mentor must commit to 2 hours per week.

A very worthy program.

Jan Read added to the topic of driving with some interesting information on driving and stopping. When travelling at a certain speed, how long it takes to stop and the distance covered. She made the interesting observation that we teach kids to drive, but do we actually teach them to stop!!Jan Read added to the topic of driving with some interesting information on driving and stopping. LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

I asked an eight-year-old girl I know how school was going. She told me a boy in her class had told her she needed to change her attitude.
“Why do you think he would say a thing like that?” I asked.
“I have no idea,” she replied,”I am perfect as I am!”

Murphy's in the pub when suddenly the door bursts open and Paddy
runs in yelling "Murphy Murphy, someone has just nicked your car."
Murphy asks "Did you see who it was Paddy?"
"No, but I got the number plate” said Paddy.

Mrs.Brown was shopping at a garden market stand in her neighbourhood. She approached the vendor and asked , “how much are these oranges?”

“Two for a dollar,” answered  the vendor.

“How much for just one?” she asked.

“Sixty cents,” answered the vendor.

“Then I’ll take the other one,” said Mrs. Brown.

Alf walked into a doctor's office and the receptionist asked him what he had. Alf said: 'Shingles.' So she wrote down his name, address,
medical insurance number and told him to have a seat.

Fifteen minutes later a nurse's aide came out and asked Alf what he had....
Alf said, 'Shingles.' So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told Alf to wait in the examining room.

A half hour later a nurse came in and asked Alf what he had. Alf said, 'Shingles..' So the nurse gave Alf a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told Alfto take off all his clothes and wait for the doctor.

An hour later the doctor came in and found Alf sitting patiently in the nude and asked Alf what he had.

Alf said, 'Shingles.' The doctor asked, 'Where?'

Alf said, 'Outside on the truck.
Where do you want me to unload 'em??'
