NYSF - National Youth Science Forum
NYSF started in 1984 at Australian National University (ANU) Canberra.
The program started as a summer school initiative to invite year 11 students entering year 12 onto a university campus to experience science at a university level. The aim is to excite students to continue their STEM subjects into a university course after finishing high school.
In modern times, nearly 700 students from around the country will visit the Universities in Canberra or Brisbane to experience 2 weeks of action-packed hands-on STEM experiences. They will have workshops, laboratories, lectures and more in a set stream of STEM that they choose. They will also participate in a careers day listening to current industries about what jobs will be like in the future decades.

Movie Night
On October 10th we held a fundraiser Movie called Thelma. The event was to raise funds for the end polio now program. Approximately 130 people attended and $2,120 was raised. With the matching from the Bill Gates Foundation we have made a significant contribution towards ending polio. Thank you to all club members for the support and donations of door prizes.

Hurricane Helene rained sadness and pain for 600 miles across our region with catastrophic impact. In parts of Tennessee, across the mountains in western North Carolina, and beyond, the magnitude of the destruction is devastating. Some have described this as a once-in-a-1,000-year event. A Tennessee civil engineer suggested that the only place anywhere in the world capable of withstanding rainfall like this without serious consequences is the ocean.

An image keeps returning of a place close to my heart. It’s located just a stone’s throw from where my wife and I were married, on the banks of the ancient Nolichucky River, which flows through this region from one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. It’s a place that holds meaning for many communities – especially for those who live there, who have been displaced from their homes, or are experiencing the loss of loved ones. The image is of Unicoi County Hospital, where just a few days ago, staff and patients had to be rescued from its rooftop.
