Hello Daybreakers,

We had a very informative meeting on 17 May 2023. We learnt about the end of life care program which is by End of Life Doula.

Our guest speakers were Fiona Umbers and Karen Skull. They have both been involved with Hospice in the Home. Both of them had a strong connection to care for people at home when they are dying. This seems to be an additional support to palliative care and hospice.

It was interesting to note 70% of the population desire to die at home and giving the ageing population. There will certainly be a lack of beds both at a hospital level let alone a nursing home level for the terminally ill and their gracious end of life.

The conception of end of life care program occurred during Covid when the elderly in particular were hospitalised with terminal conditions and very few visitors were permitted.

Loved ones weren’t able to be there and be at their bedside during the dying stages of their loved ones life. Very stressful and made it very difficult for grieving.

It was an interesting insight in the description that the dying process should not be medicalised.

The administration of pain relief medication, the syringe drip system, which is installed by palliative nurses as well as the GP team continues to monitor the levels of morphine and other treatments to ease the pain. There may be occasions where hospitalization may be required.

The comfort of a home, the comfort of a pet on the bed, the comfort of family around the dying loved one is presented as a way grieving is less traumatic and hopefully dying is less dramatic. Wishes of the dying person, although are taking seriously at a nursing aged care facility as well as in hospital, but it seems that all things that the dying person desires are able to be carried out and their wishes are a comfort  the person dying when it is carried out in the home environment.

One would say it is a much more comfortable environment but not to suggest that the nursing home and hospital environment isn’t necessary if it is required.

Both Fiona and Karen explained that they would be at a client’s house at all hours particularly they are acting as a doula.

As it was lovely said, they are rich in their hearts. The aged care package does assist in meeting the costs of the services provided by end of life care program. It seems that the Warrnambool District has been acknowledged as a compassionate community provider.

I would like to thank the boys Ian Harper, Glenn Rundle, Chris Preston and Geoff Grech in tidying up our original barbeque trailer for sale. Hopefully we will have a sale of the trailer which will contribute to our funds to distribute or assist in projects in the future.

The Rotary focus for the month of May is Youth Service and we will have our RYLA candidate, Charlotte Cossens, with our member, Andrew Giblin, attend on 24 May 2023 where we will get some insight into Charlottes experience from the RYLA experience.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank members who have been participating with our Soup Kitchen program at St Joseph’s during the month of May. It is certainly a worthy cause with the programs we have been involved both the Homeless as well as the Care program.

So, Let’s Imagine Rotary.

The Rotary Council on Legislation

What the Council does:
Council on Legislation is the legislative or parliamentary body of Rotary.
The council is composed of one delegate from each Rotary district as well as several ex-officio
members. It meets every three years and its next meeting is in 2016. It has the responsibility of
considering and acting upon all “enactments,” which are proposed changes in the Rotary
International Bylaws and Constitution and Standard Rotary Club Constitution. Proposals may be
submitted by any Rotary club, district or the RI board. The council’s actions are subject to review by
all the Rotary clubs of the world before they become final. If 10 percent of the voting strength of the
clubs oppose a council action, such legislation is suspended and it is submitted to all the clubs for a
final vote. The Council on Legislation provides the membership of Rotary a democratic process for
legislative change in the operations of Rotary International.
Selecting Representatives: Each Rotary district sends a representative to the Council. Representatives
deliberate and act upon all proposed enactments and resolutions. Enactments seek to change to
Rotary’s constitutional documents, and resolutions express an opinion or make a recommendation
to the RI Board.

Proposing Legislation to the Council on Legislation
Proposed enactments and resolutions may be submitted by clubs and districts, though club items
must be endorsed by the club’s district. Proposals may also be made by the General Council or
Conference of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, the RI Board, and the Council itself.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

A honeymooning couple is in the Watergate Hotel in Washington.

The bride is concerned about the room being bugged.

The groom says, "I'll look for a bug."

He looks behind the drapes, behind the pictures, under the rug. "A-HA!"
Under the rug was a disc with four screws. He gets his Swiss army knife, unscrews the screws,
and throws them and the disc out the window.

The next morning, the hotel manager asks the newlyweds, "How was your room?
How was the service? How was your stay at the Watergate Hotel?"

The groom says, "Why are you asking me all of these questions?"

The hotel manager says, "Well, the room under you complained of the chandelier falling on them!"

-------------------------------------------------------------

My wife is on a tropical food diet, the house is full of the stuff,
It’s enough to make a mango crazy.

I’ve just been diagnosed as colour-blind!
I know, it certainly has come out of the purple.

I am terrified of elevators,
I’m going to start taking steps to avoid them.

I bought shoes from a drug dealer once,
I don’t know what he laced them with, but I was tripping all day.

I used to hate facial hair,
But then it grew on me.

2 - I intend to live forever ... So far, so good.

3 - What happens if you get scared half to death twice?

4 - My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

5 - Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?

6 - Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

7 - The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.

8 - To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.

9 - The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.

10 - The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up.

A man goes into a doctor's office feeling a little ill.

The doctor checks him over and says, We'll have to do some blood tests.
A day later the doctor rings him with the results.
'Sorry, I have some bad news, you have Yellow 24, a really nasty virus.
It's called Yellow 24 because it turns your blood yellow and you usually only have 24 hours to live.
There's no known cure so just go home and enjoy your final precious moments on earth..'

So he trudges home to his wife and breaks the news.
Distraught, she asks him to go to the bingo with her that evening as he's never been there with
her before.

They arrive at the bingo and with his first card he gets four corners and wins $35.
Then, with the same card, he gets a line and wins $320
Then he gets the full house and wins $5000.
Then the National Game comes up and he wins that too getting $80,000.

The bingo caller gets him up on stage and says,
'Son, I've been here 20 years and I've never seen anyone win four corners, a line, the full-house
and the national game on the same card.
You must be the luckiest bastard on Earth!'

'Lucky?' he screamed. 'Lucky? Do you know I've got Yellow 24'.
‘Bugger me,' says the bingo caller. 'You've won the meat raffle as well !!

-------------------------------------------------------------

A man went to his lawyer and told him, “My neighbour owes me $500 and he won’t pay up.
What should I do?”
“Do you have any proof he owes you the money?” asked the lawyer.
“Nope,” replied the man.
“Okay, then write him a letter asking him for the $5,000 he owed you,” said the lawyer.
“But it’s only $500,” replied the man.
“Precisely. That’s what he will reply and then you’ll have your proof!”

-------------------------------------------------------------

Three old Grandmas were sitting on a bench outside the nursing home when an
old Grandpa walked by.
One of the old Grandmas yelled out, ‘Hey, we bet we can tell exactly how old you are!’

The old man said, There is no way you can guess my age!’One of the Grandmas said, ‘Sure we can! Just drop your pants and undershorts and we can tell your exact age.’

Embarrassed, but anxious to prove they couldn’t do it, he dropped his drawers.
The Grandmas asked him to first turn around a couple of times and then jump up and
down several times. Determined to prove them wrong, he did it.

Then they all said in unison, ‘You’re 89 years-old!’  Standing with his pants down around
his ankles, the old gent asked, ‘How in the world did you guess my age?’

Slapping their knees, high-fiving and grinning from ear to ear, the three old ladies happily
crowed ….. ‘We were at your birthday party yesterday!’
