President's Chat
Steve's Chat 35
Hello Daybreakers,

At this week’s meeting our “guest speaker” was our very own Leni Brockmuller, Leni gave us a fascinating insight into her trials and tribulations in the property market over the years.  I am I tradie with many years of experience in the construction/renovation industry, there is no way I would have the courage to take on many of the projects that Leni has, at times, successfully completed.

Leni was followed by Barry Brookers fun session, some of us have witnessed this before, but we still had fun at the expense of Barry, Peter Smid, Andrew Nield and our “visitor”, past member Barry Moran.  Peter tried very hard not to role a large number on the dice, so we rolled it for him, and he still got creamed on the first try.

Thursday night several members assisted with the set up for the Wunta Breakfast taking place on Friday morning.  Around twelve Daybreak members cooked and served breakfast alongside Kerry and the team from mpower.   By all accounts it was another busy event, but those present still managed to have a bit of fun, even when Glenn and Andrew tried to turn our BBQ into a char grill.  There will be tales (and a picture) to tell at next week’s meeting.

Also, on Friday the ladies caught up with Julie Grec for nibbles and drinks, Jenny Bacchetti was there, and they all helped Jenny celebrate her birthday.

On Sunday 14 members volunteered at the Bunnings BBQ /fundraiser while two others attended the Daybreak Care Program with the continued assistance of two members from the RC of Warrnambool.

At next week’s meeting our guest speaker will be Luke McInerney from the Clontarf Academy, it will be good to hear how the boys are going and listen for any coming opportunities or assistance we can provide.  Max Taylor will be providing a “Where in the World” session which, as always, will be most informative

Australian Rotary Health Article

I have just finished reading this article about a Rotarian in our District, it is a great story that you may find inspirational.  Rather that paste a link I have cut and pasted the entire article, I hope you enjoy it.

“Rotarian Finds Her “Niche” Creating Puzzles for Mental Health Research”

This is the story about a negative being turned into a positive.  Like millions of people around the world, Catherine Eagleson, the founder of the Clue Detective Puzzle Agency, found herself in the middle of a dark, disabling depression. She was forced to give up her job as a reference librarian and was also told by her GP she could only work 8 hours a week in “mainstream employment!”  She knew she needed to do something to reinvent herself.

She had always been something of an entrepreneur, and while embarking on the road to recovery, she discovered the pleasure and challenge of writing crossword and codeword puzzles.  Not only did they help her brain function, but they also helped to develop her confidence. She decided to share her love of solving puzzles and in 2004, the Clue Detective Puzzle Agency was born.

Over the years, Catherine has worked to develop her Online Puzzle Portal. Puzzles are added regularly, and include crosswords, codewords, cryptograms, sudoku and trivia quizzes. Puzzlers can sign up to an annual subscription, and the portal is also used as an electronic resource in a growing number of public libraries.  Several libraries have established their own Clue Detective clubs for their patrons to promote the benefits of puzzling (for good mental health).

Solving puzzles provides benefits for the setter as well as the puzzler.  Catherine derives her challenge from creating a problem from someone else to solve.

“Putting all the pieces of the puzzle together and then writing the clues is a mental work out for me.  In many ways, it’s a form of escapism.  All clues need to be researched and are somewhat eclectic.  You are always looking for something different, and are being taken on a voyage of discovery…” Catherine says.

“The Clue Detective Puzzle Agency has now become a proud sponsor of Australian Rotary Health and Lift the Lid on Mental Illness, donating a percentage of memberships to the campaign to raise funds for mental health research.”

Catherine became a proud member of Rotary in 2006. Soon after she joined, she first heard about Australian Rotary Health (ARH), and their involvement with mental health research.  She made a resolution then if she was ever in a (Rotary) position where she could make a difference, she would do something for ARH.

Despite a few (health) upheavals along the way, she has learned to be bold. In 2017-18, she served the Rotary Club of Drysdale as President, and was recognised as a PHF for setting up the IgKNITe (Knitting for Mental Health) project. Funds from this project are donated to ARH.

Catherine’s IgKNITe project is another way she is supporting Australian Rotary Health.
She has also become Co-Chair of Australian Rotary Health for (her) District 9780.  These are all things she would have once never dreamt possible.

“Rotary allows you to achieve amazing thing.  All you have to do is find your niche. I encourage everyone to invest in their own mental health to support Australian Rotary Health and Lift the Lid…it’s as easy as solving a crossword puzzle!”

To try out a FREE puzzle or buy a subscription to support Lift the Lid, head to the Clue Detective Puzzle Agency website.

We thank Catherine very much for her support.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

Last week I took my young grandchildren out to spend some money they were given for Christmas. In one shop my six-year-old granddaughter gasped loudly and took a step backwards.
“Now I know where Santa does his shopping,” she declared excitedly. “There is the exact skipping rope he gave me!”

Mick asked Paddy how things have been during his annual leave.
Paddy says "Mick, it's been so slow around here lately, the other night it took us two hours to watch 60 minutes !"

One Sunday, in counting the money in the weekly offering, the pastor of the Granville Presbyterian church found a pink envelope containing $1,000.  It happened again the next week. The following Sunday, he watched as the offering was collected and saw a little old lady put the distinctive pink envelope in the plate.

This went on for weeks until the pastor, overcome by curiosity, approached her. "Ma'am, I couldn't help but notice that you put $1,000 a week in the collection plate," he stated.
"Why yes," she replied, "every week my son sends me money, and I give some of it to the church."

The pastor asked, "That's wonderful, how much does he send you?"
The old lady replied, "$10,000 a week."
The pastor was amazed. "Your son is very successful! What does he do for a living?"
"He is a veterinarian," she answered.

"That is an honourable profession," the pastor said. "Where does he practice?"
The little old lady said proudly, "In Nevada. He has two cat houses in Las Vegas and one in Reno."

Jim Bob is passing by Billy Joe’s hay barn one day when through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Joe doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old John Deere tractor.   Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left.

He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt. Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to reveal his stained T-shirt underneath. With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his body, and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.

Having seen enough, Jim Bob rushes in and says, "What the world are ya doing, Billy Joe?"   "Good grief, Jim Bob, ya scared the bejeezzers out of me," says an obviously embarrassed Billy Joe, "But me’n the wife been havin' trouble lately in the bedroom d'partment, and the therapist suggested I do something sexy to a tractor."
