Gerard Lourey followed our guest speaker with a very humorous fun session that included a video clip of a contestant on Britain’s got talent. Well done Gerard it was a very clever performance by the contestant.
At the meeting we also showed some slides of the Dinner that recently occurred as a result of the 2019 Long Lunch auction donated by chef Andrew Robb. Barry Brooker certainly looked dapper in his waiters outfit and the food and table setting looked amazing.
Our speaker next week will be Daybreak member Geoff Grec who will inform us on the twenty-one day cruise he recently took through the Panama Canal. This should be an interesting session that I’m sure will spur lots of questions from the audience.

Remember that it can be just as interesting to hear the life story of one of our members, so don’t be too shy to speak about yourselves as it gives our newer members an insight into who you are and your life journey. The Wunta Breakfast was held on the Civic Green on Friday morning January 31 with Daybreak cooking and serving the breakfast. This event was a community service project with all proceeds from the breakfast to be directed from the Wunta Committee to the Bushfire Appeal. While the numbers were down on the previous year, funds of $1498.70 was raised which exceeded last year’s tally. The WUNTA Committee are a small community group and are to be congratulated on their hard work over the weekend; it was disappointing that the weather was not in their favour.
Other Daybreak News – I recently submitted Daybreaks’ quarterly report to the district which is now completed via an online process. Club reports were discussed at the Group 5 meeting held this week in Port Fairy. It is amazing to hear of the community work that is being done across the district through the Rotary Clubs of Portland, Port Fairy and Warrnambool. All clubs have been very active over the summer period and all have given very generously to the Bushfire Appeal.
Daybreak’s next Board meeting will be held Tuesday February 18
Foundation Movie Night – Sue has been busy locking in a movie and date for our next Foundation fundraiser which may be in May. I will be showing a preview of a possible movie for selection at next week’s meeting.
The Rotary Peace Concert – The Peace Concert will be held at the Lighthouse Theatre on Thursday March 5. The concert has a great line up of artists performing and will also include the awarding of several Rotary Community Peace Awards. Daybreak members recently decided not to be represented in the Awards for this year. Tickets for the concert cost $40 per person and are currently available through the Lighthouse Theatre or their online booking platform.
Peter Johns Community Award – The Board of Daybreak are calling for nominations for the Peter Johns Community Award which is likely to be presented at the Daybreak changeover breakfast scheduled for June 24. When nominating a person can you please submit a bio of the person outlining their community activity and a rationale for their selection?
2021 Rotary Peace Fellowship – applications for these fellowships have a deadline of May 31. Each year Rotary awards op to 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders from around the world to study at one of their peace centres. The fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round trip transportation and all internship and field study expenses. The program commenced in 2002 with the Peace Centres training more than 1300 fellows who now work in more than 115 countries. The Rotary Foundation also awards up to 50 fellowships for Master’s degrees and 80 for certificate studies at certain universities.
Invitation to Donate – Past President Ian Mackay will be participating in the Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal. Ian is calling for donations to an Australian based charity set up by an Australian doctor, Dr. Ray to assist the establishment of a women’s hospital in rural Nepal. Ian is organizing a fundraising appeal through a gofundme page which he has set up on behalf of Australians for Womens’ Health Ltd. Donations are fully tax deductible.
New in the Learning Centre – There are two new public image courses located in the Learning Centre and it would be beneficial to the club if members could have a look at the courses. The first is The Rotary Brand where members will learn about the Rotary Brand, why it matters and how to properly use the brand. The second course is Building Rotary’s Public Image where you will learn the value of public image and the strategies to use in projecting the image we all want for our Rotary Club.
Daybreak Promotional Flyers – Daybreak is in need of new promotional material and I have for some time now tried to instigate the development of brochure. We have people within our club with particular skills and it would be wonderful if some members could get together and make this their project now that our busy fundraising period has largely passed. If you wish to work on such a project, please contact our Public Relations Chair, Gerard.
To further assist our presence at events we are in the process of ordering a teardrop flag with signage to promote Daybreak.
The Long Lunch –Tickets have now been printed and are selling fast. If you have not reserved your tickets please contact Jenny. This is always a fun filled day on the social calendar, with fine food, music and the opportunity for fellowship amongst our Club and members of the wider community. Daybreak is on show at this event, let’s show everyone how much fun our club has when we do get together!

Anniversaries – Congratulations to members celebrating Rotary anniversaries: Di Brown became a member of Daybreak on February 5, 2014 while Ian Harper joined Daybreak on February 10, 2016. A couple of other members also have extra expense over this February period as Yvonne, wife of Peter Cassady, and Betty, wife of Andrew Suggett both have birthdays on February 4 and 9 respectively.
