President's Chat
Chat 37
Hello Daybreakers

President Steve is on the sick list at the moment, so you have the pleasure of my company for this edition of the newsletter. Consequently, this will be perhaps briefer than Steve’s usual chat.

Be the Inspiration people.

Oh alright then, I’ll give you a little bit more than that.

At Wednesday’s meeting we had Ruth Isbel come and talk to us. Ruth is the new CEO of Emma House. Ruth has had many years in the child & welfare sector being with Brophy Family and Youth Services for a long period of time, I think over 20 years.

Ruth took a 6 months position as CEO of Emma House and just recently has accepted that role in a permanent capacity.

Ruth told us about the workings of Emma House and it’s growth, approaching It’s 40th anniversary, the changing field of Domestic Violence with some startling statistics. A very informative talk with Ruth answering several questions from very interested listeners.

Then Mehul gave as an insight, although a comedic one, into the life of an Optometrist in his fun session, thanks to a funny video he showed us.

There was a little bit (but not much) chatter about the Portland Fishing and Social weekend, it does seems that what happens on the fishing trip stays on the fishing trip. And I didn’t hear any tales of “the one that got away”.

The long lunch is coming up this Sunday February 24. I’m sure, as always, it will be a very enjoyable and successful event. Thank you to Jenny and her helpers who have co-ordinated this event.

Janey announced that she was still looking for a couple of volunteers for the dog trials over the long weekend In March. I’m not sure if she has filled the roster yet, but if you can assist, I think on the Sunday is the day of need, please get in touch with Janey if you can help out. We do get a good donation from the Dog Club, and there’s a good lunch on offer.

We have the membership Development Night at the Mid City on March 7th. So keep a lookout for new members Daybreakers and invite them to this night and the club.

On the same night there is the Voices for Peace Concert at the Lighthouse Theatre. Steve encouraged anyone that isn’t attending the Membership Night to perhaps consider going along to the concert. I’ve been to several of these and they are always good entertainment and the line-up for this one looks pretty good.

The District conference is approaching on the weekend of March 22-24 in Maryborough. These are very enjoyable weekends of interesting guest speakers and Rotary information as well as great social gatherings amongst our Daybreakers and the wider District 9780 Rotarians.

Also approaching in late April (28th) is the District Assembly. Held on a Sunday, these are very informative days for all Rotarians, especially for new members and those going on next years board.

Yesterday was the first Sunday back at the Surfside 2 site in Pertobe Rd for the Daybreak Care Project

We had 2 clients attend this week.

There were 4 loads of washing done and 2 dryer loads. one person had  a shower. We spent $14 in the laundry which will be refunded by the Surfside 1 office next Sunday.

Sausages were cooked for those attending, and tea, coffee and biscuits were also provided.

We also had visits from our 2 friendly resident magpies who had a feed.

Thanks to Sue for bringing some biscuits and to Sue and Bob for giving up their Sunday afternoon to assist.

The 2 clients were once again very appreciative for the service we are providing.

Chez met up with Steve Tippett from the Warrnambool Coastguard and presented him with a cheque.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

After my recent Prostate Exam, which was the most thorough I've ever had, the Doctor left the room and the nurse came in.

As she shut the door, she asked me a question I didn't want to hear.

She said; "Who Was That Guy?”

------------------------------------------

GIRL: Babe I want and really like these pair of shoes but I forgot my purse at home..

HIM : How much are they...?

GIRL : $950...

HIM : Opens his wallet...

GIRL Excited...

HIM : Here's $20 take taxi and go fetch your purse I'll wait for you here...

------------------------------------------

A woman was waiting for a train from Frankston to the city. While waiting, she noticed a man sitting down on the platform with a bag of fish and chips.
But he wasn't really eating them. He was just sort of letting them air.
This attracted a few seagulls, who began to circle the platform. Instead of shooing the birds away, the man offered them a few chips.

He'd toss one a foot or so away from him. It was like he was beckoning them to come closer. He kept doing this, eking the chips out slowly, until there was a big group of seagulls in front of him. A tiny army of 15 or 20. He'd throw them a chip every now and then - just enough to keep the birds interested.

It was frustrating. They were getting angry, squawking.  It was like he was intentionally winding them up. Then the train came, and everyone got on. But the man stayed on the ground with his chips. Just when the train was about to leave. It happened.

Right before the doors closed, the man threw the entire bag of the fish and chips into the train. The entire flock of seagulls followed the bag. And the doors closed.

Inside the train: pandemonium!

The next train stop is five minutes away.
