- Rotary District 9820 Disaster Relief Fund – encourages clubs to donate to their district’s Disaster Relief Fund in the first instance. - RAWCS – Rotary Australia World Community Service National Fire Appeal – This is the only option for those who can only donate to a recipient with DGR (Donor Gift Recipient) status, or those who want a tax deductibility on their donations. Go to www.rawcs.org.au to donate. To make sure the funds go to those affected by the fires in our district, tag the donation to ‘East Gippsland’. RAWCS do use 2.75% of the donations for administration.
Weekly Meeting – At our weekly meeting members supported a proposal to donate $2000 to the Bushfire Appeal, depositing funds through the Rotary Club of Bairnsdale who will distribute the funds across a broad area as controlled by the East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid Committee. We have also committed to do the Wunta Breakfast on January 31 with all proceeds from the event being directed to the Bushfire Appeal.
Our Club was also supportive of a $500 donation to our local Food Share who are experiencing difficulty with supplies to local clients as supplies that come from Melbourne are currently being directed to fire affected regions.
Chez and Barry gave us an update on the Backpacks 4 Kids program, in particular the packing of hundreds of Santa Sacks at Christmas time to be distributed to Children. Thanks to Chez and Barry who represented Daybreak and gave their time to assist with the packing of the sacks.
Chez also provided an update on members. Mehul is now out of hospital and recuperating after his back operation. Our Club sends Mehul best wishes for a speedy recovery. Bob is also making progress after his hip operation but will soon get an extra boost when the battery in his pacemaker is replaced! Thanks to Ali for assisting Bob and Katie on the trip to Melbourne to facilitate this procedure.
We also congratulated Gerard on his 50th birthday, and presented him with a "mini" cake.
At next week’s meeting we will welcome children, hopefully as it is still school holidays we can get a few to come along and join in Barry’s fun session where he will highlight new game. I’m not sure if we will need to bring aprons!
Future Guest Speakers and Fun Sessions - We will have our first guest speaker for 2020 at our January 29 meeting. For the month of February the following members are rostered to either give a presentation or to organize another guest speaker. The fun session roster is also listed. Could members please advise me in advance if they have organized another speaker?

Days for Girls Working Bee – Tony Austin has notified us that There will be a Day’s for Girls working bee held this coming Sunday from 1pm at the Alan Lane Pavilion. By attending you will be helping to preserve the dignity of young PNG girls and also play an important role in keeping them at school. Skills are useful but not essential for the working bee.
Grant Writing Seminars – Three grant writing seminars are being organized for members of Rotary. The cost to members is $28 and you can register on the District website (front page). Daybreak will cover the cost for any of it’s members if they register. The locations and dates are listed below:

New in the Learning Centre – There are two new public image courses located in the Learning Centre. The first is The Rotary Brand where members will learn about the Rotary Brand, why it matters and how to properly use the brand. The second course is Building Rotary’S Public Image where you will learn the value of public image and the strategies you can use to increase understanding of Rotary in your community.
Programs of Scale Grants – Programs of Scale Grants are a new type of grant from The Rotary Foundation. The grants will support activities that last three to five years, benefit a large geographic area or a large number of people, and are aligned with one or more of Rotarys’area of focus. Importantly, these grants will fund only activities that have been successful in the past; new or untested projects are ineligible. The grant award is $2 million and only one grant will be allocated to a club or district in a competitive process requiring proposal and application. Deadline for proposals is March 1, 2020.
Toastmasters and Rotary – Rotary International President has advised that Rotary and Toastmasters are now working together to provide members with more opportunities for personal and professional growth. Toastmasters International is a global non-profit organization with more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries. Its’ members attend club meetings where they give speeches, evaluate the speeches of others, and perform other club duties with the ultimate goal of becoming more confident speakers, communicators and leaders. Toastmasters will create a leadership program for Rotary and members are encouraged to make contact with Toastmasters if there is a club in their area. The Care Program– The Care Program is operating well in the Timor Street location with numbers remaining steady. Last week we had four clients use the facilities. The roster is circulated at weekly meetings and will be emailed to members with a report after each Sunday session.
Rosters for the summer fundraisers are circulated weekly to members via email. A big thank you to those who have consistently worked on the barbecues and an even bigger thank you must go to Ian Harper who has coordinated rosters and logistics of the events. Please contact Ian if you can assist with this project or the upcoming Wunta Breakfast and Australia Day BBQ.
Summer Night Markets (BBQ) and other upcoming service projects – We have now completed three of our summer market barbecues with remaining dates of January 17th and 24th with rostered members required between 4.30-8.30pm at Lake Pertobe (see circulated roster for members tasks and times required) . Daybreak will not be participating in the January 31 Friday night market. Instead we will consolidate our efforts at the Australia Day Barbecue at the Botanic Gardens on Sunday January 26 and the Wunta Breakfast on the Civic Green on Friday morning January 31. Rosters for the latter events will be circulated at next week’s meeting.
Movies in the Park – Several members met last week to distribute flyers for the night movies throughout the caravan parks but unfortunately the movies were cancelled on the Friday night due to the inclement weather. Overall the movies were not as successful as previous years and the structure and feasibility of the project will be examined before next tourist season. Our thanks go to Sandra for her efforts in organizing this project.
