President's Chat
Steve's Chat 34
Hello Daybreakers,

At this week’s meeting our “guest speaker” was our very own Jenny Turner.  Jenny spoke on her experiences as a house mother over a 17-year period at a West Australian boarding school.  It was a very enlightening conversational presentation and many of those present posed some insightful questions.

Jenny was followed by Lydia’s fun session on the art of the Chinese whisper.  We all waited expectantly as the whisper went around the room.  What a laugh we all enjoyed when we listened to the last whisper and Lydia told us what was said in the beginning.

The weather was a little challenging for Friday’s market but the takings on the night were reasonable, considering the numbers present, with a total of $886.10. The following photographs taken during the night will show the relaxed atmosphere. Mel did a great job of cleaning the barbies at pack-up time, and during the night I had a lovely conversation with junior Rotarian Riehan Patel about next week’s start to his adventure at boarding school in Hamilton.  I asked Riehan to send us a letter next term on how he is enjoying making new friends, I will enjoy replying sometime in the future.

Overall takings from Friday nights Summer BBQs and Movies were:
  • Movies (3 nights) $3,142.20
  • BBQs (5 nights) $6,670.30
  • Table/Chair setup/pickup $500
A fantastic result in money terms, but for me an even better outcome when we think of the time we have spent working with and within our community, I continue to be amazed by all your hard work during this busy time for all.

Moving forward, we will have some time between now and mid-March to reflect on how we coped with the workload and how we enjoyed the time together.  In the first half of our Rotary year, and after the markets,  I have spoken to both PE Liza and IPP Jan a number of times, both Jan and Liza have reflected on how we do things at the markets and we believe the three of us can run a Forum in March were we can get your feedback on how we can improve what we do and perhaps even come up with another event that may assist us to eventually lessen the number of events that we participate in at this time of the year.  What do you think?   Please talk to Jan, Liza or me over the coming weeks, we are ready to listen and help you move the club forward into our 21st year.

On Saturday we attended the Botanical gardens to play our part in the Australia Day Celebrations.  The numbers present seemed to be well down on past years, perhaps a reflection on other events taking place around the country and reported on across the media.  We managed to have a bit of fun, especially Jan and Peter when I arrived back for the pack up.

This week also saw the Daybreak Care Program run from the F Project site in Timor Street for the sixth time.  Low numbers attending have been similar over the summer period, perhaps because of the venue change or maybe just the season in general.  We have been lucky to secure the venue that has allowed continuity of the program and I have no doubt that on return to Surfside 2 the number of those attending will increase.

Thanks to Glenn Brotchie and partner Marian from the Warrnambool Rotary Club, as well as Ali and Ian W for giving up their Sunday afternoon.  Also, to Ian W for providing the facilities from his shed.

At this week’s meeting I will be circulating the roster for the Bunnings BBQ, Ian Harper and I are also looking for someone to chair/coordinate/run this event.
