Special thanks went to Barry Brooker for offering storage space at his home for Jenni and Peter King to house their Backpack for Kids items. Peter and Jenni are extremely appreciative of this assistance. Thanks for your generosity Barry; you are a great example for Daybreak. Another generous act by fellow Daybreaker Andrew Suggett filtered through and was also acknowledged at our meeting. Andrew painted a portrait of one of our Care Program clients and recently presented it to them, much to their delight. Such thoughtful acts carry meaning and are prime examples of how we can connect with others and also make a difference in their lives.  Daybreak’s President Elect 2020-21, Peter Cassidy, was presented with his PE Rotary badge at this week’s meeting. We have secured nominations for Secretary and Treasurer for the 2020-21 year and would appreciate if members would consider the President Elect position for 2021-22. Many hands make light work and I’m happy to talk with any interested members in how the position may work across a shared team situation. .jpg) Guest Speaker - Victoria Dunn from the South C Dragons, Warrnambool Women’s Dragon Boat Team was our guest speaker at this week’s meeting. The group was initially formed largely by female members who were cancer survivors and while there is still some emphasis on this today, the group now comprises women and men and not all are cancer survivors. This group is very energetic having competed at Regattas in several locations including Tasmania. The group is also very social and conduct various fundraising activities for the purchase and upkeep of the equipment they use. High on their activities this year is an upcoming Regatta scheduled for the Melbourne Cup long weekend in November and to be held in Warrnambool. The South C Dragons will recommence training after their winter break on Saturday September 2 on the Hopkins River (near Proudfoots) commencing at 8am. Training will continue each Saturday morning thereafter. New members are most welcome to attend and new members do not need to have experience in the boat.  Next week’s Guest Speaker will be Daybreaker Ann Barker. Fellowship – Last Friday a group of members caught up at the Whalers for happy hour drinks, dinner and some music; great location, food and company. Next week’s Bulletin will surely reveal some fun filled images of the group attending the Terracotta Warriors at the National Gallery of Victoria. Let’s hope the Warrnambool Rattler gets our members to Melbourne and to Warrnambool in a timely manner! ROTARY NEWS RI President 2021-22 has been announced. Shekhar Mehta from the Rotary club of Calcutta-Mahanager, West Bengal India will be the President Nominee on Oct 1 if there are no challenging candidates Father’s Day Breakfast – Mary is coordinating numbers from Daybreak to attend the Father’s Day Breakfast on August 28. Held at the City Memorial Bowls Club, the event commences at 7am and costs $20 per head which includes breakfast Parkinson’s Walk – On Sunday August 18 join in A Walk in the Park, Victoria’s largest community event dedicated to improving the lives of people living with Parkinson’s. The 1km walk starts at the Breakwater Pavilion at 11am August 18 and will be followed by a free sausage sizzle. Foodshare Week – August 19-23 is Foodshare week and the organization is seeking support and requesting a gold coin whip around at your workplaces on Friday August 23. Foodshare is located at 24A Harrington Road. With applications closing on August 30, Glenn is sourcing information and eligibility criteria in light of applying for projects relevant to Daybreak. The Volunteer Awards recognize and celebrate individual and group volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution and who go above and beyond for their local communities. This is an increase from 2018 when the numbers were 33. In populations with low-immunization coverage, it is possible for the weakened virus used in the oral vaccine to circulate in the environment long enough to undergo genetic changes that can cause paralysis. This is called vaccine derived poliovirus and is tracked separately than cases of wild poliovirus. When a population is fully immunised, they will be protected against both vaccine derived and wild polioviruses. By the time the world is certified polio-free, Rotary’s contributions to the global polio eradication effort will exceed US$2.2 billion, including over US$984 million in matching funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary has set a target to raise $50 million dollars in the coming year for End Polio. Dams Project, India – Members will have received an email I recently sent relating to an upcoming Dam project in India that is being supported by a global grant. We will talk more about this project at our next meeting. However I thought I would share that we do have one member who is showing interest in participating in the project, and would be even more interested if another Daybreaker were to participate; food for thought!
