President's Chat
Liza's Chat 14
Hello members of daybreak and welcome to Bulletin 14.

Daybreak News - Our weekly meeting this week welcomed member’s children and grandchildren to our Grand Final themed breakfast.  And while I couldn’t be in attendance this week I enjoyed the photos that Chris sent through as Master of Ceremonies (along with the help of Barry B).  It was pleasing that we had seven youngsters attend and by all accounts it was a fabulous meeting with all members getting behind their preferred Clubs.  I must say I didn’t see any Giants colours in the pics, but maybe I didn’t want to see them!  If the Bombers can’t be there I say GO TIGERS!

Meanwhile, Janey, Geoff and I attended the RI President’s Dinner in Ballarat.  We enjoyed hearing from International President Mark Maloney and his wife Gay, not only on their extensive travels thus far into the Rotary Year but also on increasing and retaining membership within the organization.  The words flexibility and diversity were mentioned several times in relation to growing membership and some new strategies being developed by Rotary International will filter down to all organizations in the near future. One area that I am interested in is the idea of an E Club which I think could be useful in securing a younger demographic of professionals to Rotary.

An E Club would comprise of a group of people signed as members to your Club but they may meet independently reporting back to the parent Club periodically.  The E Club could be called on when extra hands were needed for service projects but could also plan separate specific projects; food for thought as we consider how Daybreak will negotiate the membership challenge.

Next week’s meeting will be quite informal as we have no Guest Speaker.  We will instead hear from each Committee area, bringing all members of the Club up to date with planning for the remainder of the Rotary year.  It will be an Assembly of sorts with a slightly different format than usual and will offer all members the opportunity to contribute.

Congratulations to Max Taylor who is celebrating 21 years as a Rotarian on September 30

Lift the Lid/Bunnings Project – A reminder that the Lift the Lid/Bunnings Project is fast approaching on the weekend of October 5-6.  The event is in response to a call from Australian Rotary Health and aims to raise awareness of Mental Health (hence the title Lift the Lid) and also to raise funds for Mental Health Research.  Ali is coordinating two hampers from Daybreak to be raffled and the Rotary Clubs of Warrnambool, East and Port Fairy will also be rostered over the weekend and will be providing hampers also to be raffled.  Ali has suggested a gardening hamper and a handyman hamper from Daybreak.  Ali has sent an email to each member with suggestions for the hampers and it would be appreciated if members could bring their donations to next week’s meeting.  While we have Daybreak members rostered on the first session Saturday morning, we will need a person to call by Bunnings Saturday and Sunday afternoons to collect money etc.

World Polio Day – Keep Thursday October 24 free as Daybreak will be hosting a Breakfast at the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club and inviting members of the other Clubs in Group 5 District to join us.  The cost of the breakfast will be $20 per head and we will have a Guest Speaker from Polio Network Victoria (local branch) who will speak on the number of polio survivors in Victoria that the Network supports in various ways.  This event will be our major fundraiser for the Foundation and we will need your support if it is to be a success.

Update on Cheryl – Cheryl is back in Victoria and resting up after her accident.  She is likely to be out of action for several months as her bones knit.  Several members have already contacted and met up with Chez.  As such an active person Chez will find it difficult to be largely home bound so I’m sure she will welcome calls or visits from members if they have a little spare time.  We will also be keen to organize some lunches out for Chez during her period of convalescence, so keep an eye and ear out for those announcements.

Back Pack 4 Kids – Christmas Sacks – A call has come out from Back Pack 4 Kids South West Coordinators Jenni and Peter King for donations of goods towards their extra Christmas service of Christmas Sacks, to be presented to children in out of home care.  They require donations of games, activity sets, toys, sports items, craft items (non toxic), story books and new or as new soft toys.  Alternatively, money can be donated towards this service.  Items can be dropped off at Ray White Real Estate 64 Banyan Street, 6 Roxburgh Court Warrnambool or the Masonic Centre in Kepler Street on any meeting night.  For further information contact Jenni and Peter at jdouglasnyc@gmail.com ph: 0401 611 123 or visit www.backpacks4vickids.org.au

News from the Board – Our third Board Meeting for the year was held Monday September 23.  Items of interest for the members included the need to have more promotional material printed for our Club.  We have very little left and what is left is now out of date with an incorrect meeting date.  It is suggested that the PR Committee meet and prepare suggestions for printed matter, and a budget to be considered at our next Board meeting on Tuesday October 15.  The current DL flyer is considered inappropriate and a new design is needed.  The other pressing item is also related to our promotion and image and it was suggested by the Board that our facebook page and webpage be updated to include the relevant Rotary logos in conjunction with Andrew’s silhouette design that will also be used on our trailer, this will give Daybreak a recognized identity separate to other Clubs in the region.  Due an increase in my work roster there is a need to change our Board meeting dates to the third Tuesday of each month commencing at 7pm.  It seems this schedule will suit more members.  I will send a new list of dates to each Board member and the meeting location will be 38 Kelp Street unless notified otherwise.

Rotary clothing – Before I became President I was approached about the possibility of changing the colour of tops for Rotary members.  As our busy season is approaching and we will be, in a sense on show to the public, I would like to canvas the opinions of all members in relation to items of clothing we wear, whether that be the same tops we usually wear (I have just purchased one) or whether members would like a polo shirt of a different colour with Rotary logo, do we need Rotary aprons, caps etc before our busy season.  Please email with your opinions and suggestions and the Board will consider your responses at the next meeting.

Well that’s about all for this bulletin.  Have a great Grand Final weekend and GO TIGERS!

 “LIFT THE LID”

We will be providing a Gardening Hamper and a Handymans Hamper.

Could you all PLEASE remember to bring something for each hamper to this weeks / next week’s meeting.  Baskets will be with Ian Harper / at the table as you come into our area at the Lady Bay.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

It's the AFL Grand Final between Richmond and Adelaide and a man makes his way to his seat right behind the goal square. He sits down, noticing that the seat next to him is empty.

As it is close to start time, he leans over and asks his neighbour if someone will be sitting there.

"No," says the neighbour. "The seat is empty"
This is incredible", said the man. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for theGrand final and not use it?"

The neighbour says "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Grand Final we haven't been to together since we got married in 1966"

"Oh ... I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else, a friend or relative, or even a neighbour to take the seat?"

The man shakes his head "No, they're all at the funeral."

King Neptune was holding Court and he accused a Dolphin of being an alcoholic.

The Dolphin in his own defense said "But Sire, I only drink for Medicinal Porpoises" .

"I'd move heaven and earth to be able to break a hundred on this course," sighed the veteran golfer. "Try heaven," advised his caddie. "You've already moved most of the earth."

Bob moved in with his girlfriend and her enormous collection of old magazines. They took up an entire room.

“It’s me or the magazines,” Bob insisted. When she refused to part with any of them, Bob left. As he told his friends, she just had too many issues.

A man was saying how first-aid classes had prepared him for an emergency. "I saw a woman hit by a car," he said. "She had a broken arm, a twisted knee and a fractured skull. "How horrible. What did you do?" he was asked. "Thanks to my first-aid training," he said, "I knew exactly how to handle it. I sat on the kerb and put my head between my knees so I wouldn't faint."

During lunch on the building site, my workmates and I were playing “I Spy”. When it was his turn, Paul said, “I spy two words starting with R and I.”

After 15 minutes, we gave up and demanded to know the answer.

“Wrought iron,” he said.

Barry calls his boss and says, “I’m having trouble with my eyes.”

“What’s wrong with them?” the boss asks.

“I can’t see myself coming into work today,” says Barry.

“According to this survey on marriage, 50% of men are unfaithful to their wives,” a wife tells her husband, “and the rest would be if it wasn’t for their hobby. Do you know what their hobby is?”

“No idea,” replies her husband.

“No,” snarls his wife. “I didn’t think so!”
