President Preston’s Prattle...  #11 :  19/11/2023
                                        November:  Rotary Foundation Month.
Hello Daybreakers,

District Governor Visit:
We welcomed DG Ian McKay to our meeting on Wednesday 15th November.
Ian was President of Warrnambool Daybreak in 2016-17. It was great to catch up with Ian again. He informed us that since 1st July 2023, he has done 17,000 kms during his club visits in the district. Ian reminded us that the Rotary Foundation is an all important part of Rotary International, he shared a quote,  “ Rotary Foundation is the fuel that drives Rotary International”.  So this is a reminder for us all, and as it is actually, Foundation month. Please consider the Rotary Foundation as one of your choices for support as you decide which charity will I support this year. A PP President of Warrnambool Daybreak Ian Watson, used to say that Rotary Foundation should be your first option when making a donation, because we know the money is not only to be used for a rotary project somewhere in the world, you can actually direct your donation towards certain areas.

Well, it's not often we can pull the wool over Harpo’s eyes. Ian was recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow at our meeting during the District Governor visit on Wednesday morning. Marita joined Ian and the rest of us for breakfast on the pretence that she was to catch up with Sherril McKay, so Ian panicked when he realised Sherril wasn’t coming to the meeting. Ian has been a member of Warrnambool Daybreak since February 2016 and the Community Service Director since July 2017 to present. Ian was instrumental in the formation of the Crisis Accommodation Program he liaises with The Salvation Army who provide clients for the 6 caravans currently in the program.
Ian was also very much involved with the Care program now called Share the Load, where clients are able to wash and dry their clothes free of charge and have a shower while the washing is being done.
We are proud of you Harpo, a very worthy PHF recipient.  Enjoy your holiday travel to Tasmania this week.

Guest Speaker:
This coming Wednesday's meeting we will welcome Beckie Nevin from Womens Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West. As we are approaching the 10 days of Activism starting Friday November 24th, with this years focus for Rotary in Australia being “Say No to Domestic and Family Violence”. Beckie’s talk and facts might be an eye opener for some members I would say.

A reminder that on Friday 24th November there will be a walk for this cause starting 12.30pm at the Swan Reserve - if you'd like more information, please talk to Glenn.

                          Noorat Show Gates November 18th:

Great Event: Thanks to those Daybreakers who volunteered Saturday for the 3 hour shifts and some stayed and did more time. The crowd number was unbelievable. I was informed this is the biggest regional Victorian show.
The Public carpark was absolutely chockers. I didn’t even take a photo of Daybreaks team in action, no time, we hit the ground running and the issues with the electronic ticketing, lack of constant WIFI connection, people, families, queuing. It was an eye opener and big experience. The Rotary Organiser -Liaison with the show committee Tony Austin said he will have many words to say to the Show committee about getting the WIFI connection correct for next, it was very embarrassing at times as families waited patiently for the Tablet ticketing machines to reconnect.
Tony sends his gratitude to all those that helped out on the gates.
Thanks Ann Barker for some show snaps

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION POWERING GOOD IN THE WORLD

DENNIS SHORE, TRUSTEE THE ROTARY FOUNDATION 2023-27 — OCT 5, 2023

When Arch Klumph had his inspiration in 1917 to establish a Rotary endowment fund “for the purpose of doing good in the world” he most likely did not envisage The Rotary Foundation as it now exists – or perhaps he did! Either way he would be pleased with the outcome, even though it took longer to achieve its destiny than he would have hoped.
Article by Dennis Shore, Trustee The Rotary Foundation 2023-27
Arch Klumph was a man of many talents and achieved great success in and outside of Rotary. His Rotary world in 1917 was however rather small compared with Rotary today, having 230 clubs in 8 countries and 27,000 members. Today our Rotary and Rotaract membership is more than 50 times that of 1917 and there are more than 200 times the number of clubs. Our Foundation has also developed from an inspiration to a powerhouse for good in the world.
The significant growth of Rotary aligns with the evolution of Arch’s vision for The Rotary Foundation. The ideals set out after the Second World War and the coincident passing of Paul Harris were the catalysts for significant fund-raising for The Rotary Foundation. The Foundation kick-started international service and Rotary’s focus on peace and international understanding and aptly has been described as the “engine room”, the “heartbeat” or the “pulse” of Rotary.
The Rotary Foundation and Rotary International have developed and adapted to changing times and expectations. Today, The Rotary Foundation operates 4 funds to accommodate the aspirations and preferences for Rotary members to both fund and utilise the Foundation to do good in the world.
The Annual Fund, PolioPlus, Disaster Response and The Endowment Fund provide a menu of opportunities. They are managed and operated differently in accordance with their purpose and the way the funds are distributed. The PolioPlus and Disaster response funds are invested for quick turnaround. The Annual Fund is invested on a short to medium term basis to provide income commensurate with risk.
The Endowment Fund invests to generate a higher long term rate of return. For many years now a dollar invested in the Endowment Fund has distributed 100% of its value over 25 years and still retained its real value over that time. Little wonder that the Endowment Fund used to be known as the Perpetual Fund. Go to this link if you would like to know more about how your donations are invested: Rotary investments | Rotary International
The 15 members of the Board of Trustees of The Rotary Foundation are charged with the management of all business of The Foundation (some matters also requiring RI approval). As the Governing body of The Foundation the Board of Trustees establishes policy for The Foundation and evaluates the implementation of the policy by the general secretary and staff.
As a new Trustee I have experienced 6 months of attending prior Trustee Board meetings and also been inducted into the TRF Finance Committee and the RI Audit Committee as a Trustee Representative. I can confidently assure all Rotary members that our 4 Star Charity Navigator rating is well deserved. Only one percent of organizations Charity Navigator evaluates have received 15 consecutive 4-star evaluations. The Rotary Foundation works hard to earn the trust and support of every donor and will continue to do so.
