President's Chat
Steve's Chat 38
Hello Daybreakers,

This week’s meeting was is in the back room, the meeting was well attended by Daybreakers, and we quickly ran out of seats at the tables.  Returning founding Member Barry Moran was happy to share a joke with Cheryl whilst she hosted her two guests, Helene Browne and Laxon Fowler.

Our  “guest speaker” was Glenn Rundell, Glenn presented his “Members Story” and we all enjoyed his tales of construction issues around our region.  Glenn showed some interesting construction pictures from projects he had managed, and many of us smiled when he spoke at length on the Historical train turntable project.

Glenn went on to discuss our ongoing care program including past involvement with the RC of Warrnambool.  Moving forward we will be requiring 3 Daybreak members to attend the program.

Cheryl had found a very interesting time lapse video for us to watch.  It showed a young man constructing a water supply well with an, at times, lost tradecraft.  In modern times it is easy to forget how we used to do things; but at least Rotary hasn’t forgotten when it comes to funding global projects, all of our global projects must be sustainable to qualify for funding.

At next week’s meeting Andrew Nield will present his “Members Story”, and our guest speaker will be  the new manager of Warrnambool’s  Bendigo Bank, Tim Gregory.

This Sunday we will be holding our Annual Long Lunch Fundraiser.  Jenny Turner and committee have been very busy in recent times and around 95 people will be attending.  Last year we were able to allocate $9,000.00 to local programs as a result of this event.  Fingers crossed that we will have as much fun this year while raising funds for Warrnambool special development Schools specialized playground equipment and Southwest Healthcare’s much needed imaging device.

Jenny Bacchetti is trying to organise a food handling course at WDEA.  With strong group booking numbers we can get a discount.  At present the cost per member is $110.  This course can be delivered after 5 pm on a week day or on a Saturday during March/April or May.  As a club we probably need at least 3 members to attend, what do you think?  Are you interested in attending?  Please give me a call.

On March 7th there are two events taking place.  Firstly, our membership chairs Peter Smid & Cheryl Bellman have organised an information evening for prospective new members.  Please call Peter or Cheryl if you can assist or can bring along a friend or neighbour who may be interested.

Warrnambool Centrals peace concert committee are also requesting we support their annual event.  For those that are not involved in the membership evening please support the peace concert, it’s sure to be an enjoyable evening and all funds raised go towards sponsoring an Australian Rotary Health Peace Scholarship.

District Events: Conference

Many of you are going to the District conference.  The event is drawing near, and I encourage members to register.  There is some information that I would like you to pass on to members about the Conference.

As part of this year's Conference, we can show up to 10 digital photographs showing our club being "inspired" In some way during the past year.  The photographs will be included in a slide show running throughout the Conference. The photos can be of ANY club activity where we are in action, having fun and/or serving the community.

We need to choose photos that are self-explanatory, because there won't be any captions added to the slide shows. Landscape format is preferred to portrait.  If you have captured an event on your device please send it to me in the next 8 days, I will try to include your choice in what is sent to district.

Our District Governor, Anthony, would like Rotarians to take up an interclub challenge to win a special prize at conference.

Take photograph’s and tally up the number of hours that we participate in some form of physical activity and divide the total hours by total members in the club. We are looking for the club with the highest physical activity hours/member.

Naturally as Rotarians, there won’t be any cheating and physical activity can be any activity that moves you, e.g. walking, dancing, tai chi, running, cycling, swimming, gardening etc.   District even have one Rotarian who is attempting to cycle around District 9780 to Conference.

DAYBREAKERS, our club’s activity hours tally starts from 9.00am Thursday, March 14 until 6pm Friday, March 22 for the start of District 9780 Conference 2019 at Maryborough Vic.

RI News/Information: Polio

“Take a virtual tour of Room 711”

On 23 February, Rotary celebrates its 114th anniversary. Take a virtual tour of Room 711, a re-creation of the office where Paul Harris met with three acquaintances to start a club based on “mutual cooperation and informal friendship.” Thousands of visitors to Rotary world headquarters experience the room every year. But we wanted to give all our members an opportunity to experience the room without traveling to Evanston.  Follow the link to learn more:

I asked the sales lady “why was Divorced Barbie was so expensive?”

The census taker told the mayor of the little bush town that he was puzzled about the town’s population.  For the past five years he had been on the job the population was the same – 1503. “Must be something wrong.”

“No,” said the Mayor. “It’s always been 1503.”

“But don’t you have babies?”

“Yep,” said the Mayor, “and every time we do some bloke has to leave town.”

A bloke was in the bar and he is very drunk.

A group of the guys noticed his condition and decided to be good Samaritans and take him home.

First they stood him up to get his wallet so they could find out where he lives, but he kept falling down.

He fell down 6 more times on the way to the car, each time with a real thud.

After they got to his house he fell down another 4 times on the way to the door.

His wife comes to the door and says, “We bought your husband home.”

The wife says… “Where’s his wheelchair?”

Billy Graham was returning to Charlotte after a speaking engagement and when his plane arrived there was a limousine there to transport him to his home. As he prepared to get into the limo, he stopped and spoke to the driver.

'You know' he said, 'I am 87 years old and I have never Driven a limousine. Would you mind if I drove it for a while?'
The driver said, 'No problem. Have at it.'
Billy gets into the driver's seat and they head off down the highway. A short distance away sat a rookie State Trooper operating his first speed trap.
The long black limo went by him doing 70 in a 55 mph zone.

The trooper pulled out and easily caught the limo then got out of his patrol car to begin the procedure. The young trooper walked up to the driver's door and when the glass was rolled down, he was surprised to see who was driving.

He immediately excused himself and went back to his car and called his supervisor. 'I know we are supposed to enforce the law.... but I also know that important people are given certain courtesies. I need to know what I should do because I have stopped a very important person.'

The supervisor asked, 'Is it the governor?'
The young trooper said, 'No, he's more important than that.'
The supervisor said, 'Oh, so it's the president.'
The young trooper said, 'No, he's even more Important than that.'

After a moment, the supervisor finally asked, 'Well then, who is it?'

The young trooper said, 'I think it's Jesus, because he's got Billy Graham for a chauffeur!'

When we decided to sell our house, we nailed "FOR SALE BY OWNER" signs on two trees in our front yard. Before long, the doorbell rang. "How much do you want for the trees?" a young man asked.

A woman visited a psychic of some local repute. In a dark and gloomy room, gazing at the Tarot cards laid out before her, the Tarot reader delivered the bad news: "There is no easy way to say this so I'll just be blunt: Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent death this year."

Visibly shaken, the woman stared at the psychic's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. She simply had to know.

She met the Tarot reader's gaze, steadied her voice and asked, "Will I get away with it?"
