Prior to the fun session we watched a TED-X Video – By Mark Balla When Mark visited slum villages on a business trip to India a few years ago, he noticed schools were full of small children and teenage boys, but no teenage girls. He wondered: where were the teenage girls? What he learnt was teenage girls had stopped going to school because there were often no toilets. It became clear that once girls get their period, they stop going to school. For adolescent girls in India, it became a time of mourning, as they couldn’t easily participate in life or have the same opportunities as the boys. Mark, a member of the Box Hill Central Rotary Club, has started a charity called We Can’t Wait. With the help of Indian Rotary clubs, the charity will install toilets in schools in India. The squat toilets will work on a composting system, because adequate plumbing infrastructure is not in place. According to the World Health Organisation, 600 million Indians are forced to defecate in the open. The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council states that of the 1.4 million schools in India, 200,000 have no toilets and a further 400,000 have unusable toilets Water.org states that every 21 seconds, a child dies from water-related illness and that more people have a mobile phone than a toilet. Leading up to World Polio Day on October 24th there has been some sad news. A nine-year-old child has been confirmed as the first death from polio in Papua New Guinea (PNG) since the country was declared polio-free 18 years ago. PNG was declared polio-free in the year 2000 and before this year, its last recorded case was in 1996. To read the full article from ABC News, please follow the supplied link. Peter Haywood - Rotary Club of Maryborough - has proposed a unique idea for a different method of arriving at the District Conference 9780 in 2019 and at the same time raise money for End Polio. The concept is to create a simple ride. A simple ride that travels through each of the Rotary towns in District 9780 and completes the loop at our District conference March 2019 (Maryborough). Eight days of cycling (approx. 250km each day), cycle for 30 minutes only or rotate in a crew to complete a stage or mix it around with a variety of cycling/resting crews for a longer distance.
