DAYBREAK NEWS

Our speaker at this week’s meeting was Daybreak Member Ian Watson who gave us a very informative talk on his month long visit to PNG where he worked within a team mainly on water projects but also delivering other needed items to schools in isolated regions.  While the scenery looked amazing and the company enriching, it also looked like hard work from the team to deliver on the projects.  Ian conveyed just how valuable and needed the work was for the people living in the remote villages.  We often take for granted and as our right, to have clean running water in our homes.  The work of the team to deliver fresh water to some villages was very much appreciated by the people of PNG.  Well done Ian!

Upcoming Speakers - Our speaker next week Wednesday Sept 18 will be Doreen Power, CEO of Lyndoch Living.  The following week September 25th will be our Grand Final theme Day and we are hoping for members to bring along their children and/or grandchildren.  I have received confirmation from The Lady Bay that a children’s full buffet will cost $13.

Director’s Briefs – I have put aside our weekly meeting on October 2nd  as a time for each Director of Committees to give the members a brief overview of their objectives, and their progress and plans to achieve them.  If a Director cannot be in attendance on that day can you nominate someone from your committee to speak on your behalf?  This meeting will be two weeks before DG Rosanne Kava attends our meeting on October 16 and may be beneficial before we get any questions directed toward specific areas.  Please note if possible Roseanne will meet with the Board at the Lady Bay directly after our meeting on October 16.

World Polio Day – Thursday October 24 is World Polio Day.  We are considering a breakfast event and inviting the Group 5 Clubs to acknowledge this day.  While still in the initial stages of planning, this event will be an End Polio fundraiser (rather than our usual movie night) and it is envisaged the breakfast event will be in lieu of Clubs ordinary weekly meetings.  The event will not be held at The Lady Bay but a venue to be confirmed. The cost is likely to be $20 pp and we will have a Guest Speaker (tbc).  More details will be circulated as the event develops but for now mark the date in your Calendars as our support for End Polio Now and to acknowledge World Polio Day.

Birthdays and Anniversaries – Congratulations to Mary Bouwman who celebrates her birthday on September 13.  Also Drew Giblin has an expensive week coming up with an anniversary on September 17. Congratulations Drew and Julie on 25 years of marriage.

Speedy Recovery – All Daybreakers were saddened to hear Chez has broken her arm whilst on holiday in Far North Queensland and we wish her a very speedy recovery.  Chez has trouble either getting to her holiday destinations or in this case returning as she was to fly home the morning after her accident. I believe Chez will be flying home on Sunday and all going well will be at our next weekly meeting.

ROTARY NEWS

Seven Women are excited to share that construction on the Seven Women Guesthouse is almost complete.  Also Founder Steph Woollard has been selected as a semi-finalist for the Global Ten Outstanding Young Persons Program.

Hurricane Dorian - Rotary clubs are taking action to provide immediate relief to those affected by Hurricane Dorian. By mobilizing Rotary’s vast global network, members are able to raise funds, collect essential items, and work with other agencies to meet urgent needs. Our disaster relief partner ShelterBox is sending a team to the Bahamas to assess damage and evaluate recovery options. Rotary also has a Disaster Response Fund that helps clubs support rebuilding efforts where the need is greatest. Learn more about the fund, and follow updates on Rotary’s Facebook page.

Passport Clubs – You may not be aware of Passport Clubs and how they operate.  A passport club is a Rotary Club that encourages members to attend meetings of other Rotary clubs as long as they attend a specified number of meetings in their own club each year. Members are also encouraged to participate in service projects organized by other clubs. On the Gold Coast of Australia Rotarians are using a passport club to reach young professionals who want to use their passion, energy, and intelligence to better their community.  Could this work in Warrnambool? Food for thought perhaps.

Membership Statistics – Rotary have provided a snapshot of why people join, stay and leave Rotary:
Why they Join – 40% join to participate in local service projects, 31% join to participate in International service projects and 27% join for personal development and training.
Why they stay – 46% stay because of participation in local service projects, 41% stay because they enjoy the friendship and fellowship and 29% stay because they connect with people outside of their work and social circles.
Why they leave – 34% leave because of the cost and the time constraints, 32% leave because of the Club environment and culture and 17% leave because of unmet expectations.
These are important statistics for retaining and growing membership and it would be valuable to monitor how our own club fits into these statistics

Ian’s talk to the members this week showed us how Rotary does have the capacity to Connect the World and while we are tucked away in Warrnambool, we are, through our work, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable world. Have a great week and I’ll see you next Wednesday at The Bay.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

The son of a Saudi mogul goes to study in Europe.
One night, the phone rings at the house of his parents.
Dad: How's your life going, son?

Son: It's going well, dad.
Dad: Is something wrong? You don't sound happy.
Son: No Dad, everything's fine. Berlin is wonderful, the people are nice and I really like it here.

Dad: Son, tell me the truth. I know something's not right.
Son: Dad, I am a bit ashamed to drive to my college with my gold Ferrari 599GTB when all my teachers and many fellow students travel by train.

Dad: My dear son, why didn't you say so earlier? I will send you 15 million euro this instant. Please stop embarrassing us and go and get yourself a train too.

A New York attorney representing a wealthy art collector called his client.

He says, "John, I have some good news and some bad news."
The art collector replied, "I've had an awful day; let's hear the good news first."

The attorney said, "Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she invested $5,000 in two pictures that she thinks will bring a minimum of $15-20 million. I think she could be right."

John replied enthusiastically, "Well done! My wife is a brilliant businesswoman! You've just made my day. Now that I know that I can handle the bad news, you mind telling me what it is?"

The attorney replied, "The pictures are of you and your secretary."

A relative of mine has a lovely boss who is blind. The other day he was out shopping with his guide dog. On reaching the checkout, he heard some giggles around him and wondered what was happening.

“Excuse me, but do you also want to buy the bag of carrots you dog has in it’s mouth?” the cashier laughed.
The boss laughed too, then. Carrots are his dog’s favourite treat. He paid for them happily.

After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling.

When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in all the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she endured.

Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched - with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down in a daze.

The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?"

“Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesday …………..but I fish on Fridays.
