President's Chat
Liza's Chat 19
Hello members of Daybreak and welcome to Bulletin number 19

At this week’s meeting we said farewell to our Sergeant at Arms Geoff Grec, as he embarks on a well earned holiday to various places including a cruise through the Panama Canal.  The trip will also see Geoff spending Christmas with his family residing overseas.  We look forward to having Geoff as a Guest Speaker in the New Year and seeing some pics of the places he will be visiting.  In his absence our President Elect, Peter Cassady, has kindly offered to step in as Sergeant at Arms till Geoff returns.

Our Guest Speaker at this week’s meeting was Alistair McCosh, Director of the Warrnambool Campus of Deakin University. Alistair discussed the value of the campus to the Warrnambool region and the value to linking with business and professions operating in this regional area. Securing International students into courses based in Warrnambool remains high on Deakin’s and Alistair’s agenda as Director of the campus. This gives Warrnambool students experience with a diverse cohort without leaving the Warrnambool area.  Alistair has also been able to secure reduced accommodation costs for many of the students making the cost of living for students studying at Warrnambool to be far less than those of students studying in Metropolitan locations.

Our Guest Speaker next week will be organized by Gerard Lourey and we will have a visit from Clancy McCoy who will receive some financial support from Daybreak to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF).

WCC BBQ – Glenn and Ian gave a brief report to the members on the barbecue that was held on Sunday October 28 in conjunction with the Warrnambool City Council to welcome International workers to our region. By all accounts the barbecue was a success with WCC providing the food and $500 to Daybreak for providing the service.

Care Program – The Care Program has been receiving record numbers of clients with eight people requiring laundry and shower assistance last week and six the previous week.  This is pleasing and shows the program is needed by the community. We will soon need to relocate the program for the summer period and members are currently sourcing an alternative venue.  As soon as another venue is confirmed we will inform members and clients.

World Polio Day Breakfast – Jan reported that the breakfast and raffle cleared nearly $1100 which was a great result. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will add $2200 making the overall donation to End Polio quite sizable.

Trailer update – Glenn, Ian and the team have been very busy attending to the updates on the trailer which was used for the WCC BBQ last Sunday.  I must say the trailer is looking pretty good!  Photos below will show the improvements carried out.  Well done guys.

Rotary Peace Concert and Rotary Peace Awards –  Save the date for the date for The Rotary Peace Concert which has been set for Thursday March 5, 2020 at the Lighthouse Theatre.  The call has gone out for nominations of young people, adults and Rotarians who you believe are community heroes, whose actions build stronger more resilient and harmonious communities.  They will be awarded Rotary Peace Awards at the concert.

Documentary Launch, Open Invitation – James Mepham from the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Central has sent an open invitation to the launch of his documentary MELGHAT which highlights an inspiring team of Rotarians in India saving lives.  Here lies an opportunity to bring along a non-Rotarian to share and show the International work of Rotary.  The screening is Nov 13, 5.30 for 6pm start, cost FREE (see poster attached) RSVP 0414 833 012

Dragon Boat Come and Try – The South C Dragons are holding a Come and Try session this Saturday morning Nov 2 at 9.30am.  If you are interested in having a try at Dragon Boat racing meet at the Hopkins River Pontoons near the Warrnambool Rowing Club.  You must be over 18 and will need to bring active wear, a towel water bottle and sunscreen and enthusiasm.  Please no bare feet or thongs.

Update on End Polio – On World Polio Day Rotary and its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners announced that wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) has been eradicated worldwide. WPV3 is only the third infectious human disease-causing pathogen to be eradicated in history, following smallpox and wild poliovirus type 2.  This achievement means that two of the three wild polio strains have now been wiped out.  This is an important marker of progress against the disease.  It was also announced that Nigeria has gone three years without a case of wild poliovirus, which means that the entire African region could be certified wild poliovirus-free at some time in 2020.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

Did you hear about the mime who was arrested after he got into a bar fight and broke his left arm?
He still has the right to remain silent

Shortly before our 25th wedding anniversary, my husband sent 25 long-stemmed yellow roses to me at my office. A few days later, I plucked all the petals and dried them. On the night of our anniversary, I spread the petals over the bed and lay on top of them, wearing only a negligee.

As I’d hoped, I got a reaction from my husband.
When he saw me, he shouted, “Are those potato chips?”

Tony goes to his doctor with a painful knee and the doctor places his stethoscope on Tony's kneecap and he hears a tiny voice saying, "Lend me some money, lend me some money."

Tony then says, "Doc, my ankle hurts too!"

So the doctor puts his stethoscope on Tony's ankle and he hears another tiny voice saying, "I want to borrow money quickly, lend me money!"

The good doctor then says, "This is far more serious than I thought, your leg is broke in two places!"

Politicians and nappies have one thing in common.
They should both be changed regularly and for the same reason.

A young woman in Melbourne was so depressed that she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the Yarra. She went down to the docks and was about to leap into the freezing water when a handsome young sailor saw her tottering on the edge of the pier, crying.

He took pity on her and said, "Look, you have to much to live for. "l'm off to America in the morning, and if you like, I can stow you away on my ship. I'll take good care of you and bring you food every day." Moving closer, he slipped his arm round her shoulder and added, "I'll keep you happy, and you'll keep me happy."

The girl nodded Yes, After all, what did she have to lose? Perhaps a fresh start in America would give her life new meaning.

That night, the sailor brought her aboard and hid her in a lifeboat. From then on, every night he brought her three sandwiches and a piece of fruit, and they made passionate love until dawn.

Two weeks later, during a routine inspection, she was discovered by the captain. "What are you doing here?" the captain asked.

"I have an arrangement with one of the sailors," she explained. "I get food and a trip to America, and he's screwing me."

"He certainly is," the captain said. "This is the Williamstown Ferry."
