President's Chat
Liza's Chat 15
Hello Daybreakers and welcome to Bulletin 15

Daybreak News - We have moved into October the month of Economic and Community Development in the Rotary calendar year; the year is passing by very quickly!  At this week’s meeting we heard from each Director of the Board who outlined their committee’s achievements thus far in the year and also their plans for future projects.  It was a worthwhile segment, giving opportunity for discussion and input from the members into each area.

It was nice to have Mel and his son join us for the meeting and it is hoped Chez will also be able to join us next week.  Barry gave us an update on Chez’s health and passed on her gratitude to members for their contact while she is recuperating.  I believe there have been a couple of social get-togethers over the last few weeks.  If possible and relevant can members take some pics of these events when they happen and forward to Gerard for inclusion in the Bulletin?  I forgot to take some pics of the meeting this week so we will be a little slim on images for this edition of the Bulletin.

Next week our guest speaker has been organized by Ali and will be Murray Kingsly who will speak on the Care Program and communicating with vulnerable persons.  Sergio has been allocated the Fun Session and will show us some pics of his recent holiday; both should be interesting segments.

Lift the Lid – After a shaky start, our Lift the Lid/Bunnings project is set for this weekend October 5-6. Three other Rotary Clubs are joining us in raising funds for Mental Health Research; RCW, RCW East and RC Port Fairy.  Each Club has donated hampers which will be raffled at 4pm Sunday afternoon.  Daybreak is rostered on from 8.30 to 12.30 Saturday morning with two members on two shifts (8.30-10.30 and 10.30 – 12.30).  We would ideally like three members per shift so if you have some spare time it would be appreciated if you could call into Bunnings to see if we need an extra hand.

AGM – Daybreak’s Annual General Meeting will be held at some time in November (date tbc at the next Board Meeting) and before then we need a nomination for a President Elect (PE) for the year 2021-2022.  If you are a member that has not previously held the position of President please consider nominating.  We already have nominations in place for Secretary and Treasurer for the 2020-2021 Rotary year.

DG Visit – Our District Governor Rosanne Kava from the Rotary Club of Swan Hill will be attending our meeting on October 16 and I’m hoping we will have a bumper attendance from our members on this week.  This is a great opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the future path of Rotary and to also ask questions you may have on any aspect of Rotary.  The Board members will meet separately with Roseanne and District Governor John Clue directly after our meeting at 8.30.

World Polio Day – Thursday October 24 is World Polio Day and Daybreak will be hosting a Breakfast at the Lawn Tennis Club on Pertobe Road (see poster attached).  This will be Daybreak’s major fundraiser for the Foundation and we’ll need assistance from all members in order for this to be a success and possibly an ongoing event. Members from all Clubs in the Group 5 District have received an invitation and thus far we have had a good response from Clubs regarding attendance.

We will have a Guest Speaker from Polio Network Victoria (local branch). A roster will be circulated at next week’s meeting for various tasks and we look forward to members filling it quickly.

Important dates – Other important dates on the Rotary Calendar are

Nov 16 – PETS Training, Ararat
Nov 23 – Membership and Public Image Seminar, Port Fairy.  $35 Register District website
Feb 23 – Longest Lunch, Brother Fox, Deakin University
Feb 21-23 2020 – PETS Multi-District, Creswick
March 21-23 – District Conference, Swan Hill
April 26 2020 – District Assembly, Ararat or Stawell (tbc)

Fellowship Events – Sergio and Jenny are opening their house to members for a fellowship evening on Saturday October 19.  Commencing 6.30-7pm members are asked to bring a main course or dessert and their own “beverage supply”.  This should be a good night and I look forward to seeing the pics!

Sergio is also organizing another fishing trip to Portland and the date is now locked in for February 29.  Save the date and more details will be circulated to members as plans develop.

Good Luck – Daybreak members wish Chris and Janey Preston the best of luck as they compete this weekend in the shooting section of the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide.  The Games are held every two years in an Australian Capital City.  We hope they continue their trajectory and bring home the trophies, or at least have a good time trying to.

Birthdays and Anniversaries – Congratulations to Jenny Turner who celebrates a birthday on October 6.  Max Taylor has also celebrated 21 years as a Rotarian on September 30, although he probably has other things to celebrate as he is currently in Paris!

As you know Rotary International President Mark Maloney’s theme for 2019-20 is Rotary Connects the World. He recently reinforced this theme at the Presidential Dinner in Ballarat asking Rotarians to “strengthen the many ways that Rotary connects the World, building connections that allow talented, thoughtful and generous people to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service”.  Daybreak members are aligning with his call and it’s pleasing to see our teams mobilise when the need arises and projects develop. Have a great week and I’ll see you at the Bay next week.

Our New Marquee

OThe new marquee to replace our smaller 4.5m x 3.0m marquee arrived today.

Harpo, Chris and I participated in the Marquee First Erection Ceremony this afternoon to partially erect it to check everything was there, and it looks great.
Sergio arrived just after we packed it up - to drink my beer!

The marquee package includes an aluminium frame, canopy, 3 walls, a wheeled carry bag, ropes and pegs and cost $1,048.20. It was funded by a $3,000 grant (on a 2:grant - 1:local contribution basis) from Warrnambool City Council. The grant was allocated with the purpose to upgrade the BBQ trailer and purchase the marquee.

The trailer upgrade is also progressing well.

Cheers
Glenn

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

I used to work with a man nicknamed “Blister” - he only ever appeared after the hard work was done.

I lived in the bush for a number of years and there were a lot of nicknames. Two of my favourites:  One bloke I knew was called Aspro because he was a slow working dope. The other one was called have-a-chat, for obvious reasons.

In a trial, a small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand.

He approached her and asked, "Mrs Jones, do you know me?" She responded, "Why, yes, I do know you, Mr Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realise you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs Jones, do you know the defence attorney?"

She again replied, "Why, yes, I do. I've known Mr Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigotted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women - one of whom was your wife. Yes, I know him."
The defence attorney nearly died.

The judge asked both counsellors to approach the bench and, in a a very quiet voice, said, "If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to jail!"

A skeleton walks into a bar. He says “Give me a beer….and a mop.”

A woman walks into a bar and asks the barman for a Double Entendre. So he gave her one.

My wife told me to embrace my mistakes. I hugged her.

Have you tried Blindfolded Archery. You don’t know what you’re missing!

My mother was fuming when I told her I had bought a theatre. She said ‘Are you having me on?” I said “I’ll give you an audition but I can’t promise anything.”

My wife said she was leaving me because of my addiction to The Monkees. I thought she was kidding. Then I saw her face.

My dog is a problem. He’ll chase anyone on a bike. In the end I had to take the bike off him.

My wife wants me to stop doing my flamingo impersonation. I’ll have to put my foot down.

A man came up to me in the street and said “Can you spare a minute for Cancer Research?”. I said ‘Yes, but I don’t think we’ll get much done.”

(Me, calling a gym)
“I’m calling to ask if someone could teach me to do the splits”
“Of course, how flexible are you?”
“Well, I can’t do Tuesdays.”

I’ll never be unfaithful to my wife for the reason I love my house very much.

On my first day in the Roman prison, they took away my name and gave me a number – I was LIVID

I have a really good EpiPen. It means a lot to me as my dying friend gave it to me and it seemed really important to him that I have it.

“My dog loves listening to mid 19th century  operettas”
“Offenbach?”

Eleven people were hanging on a rope under a helicopter--ten men and one woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided that one had to leave, because otherwise they were all going to fall. They weren't able to name that person, until the woman gave a very touching speech.

She said that she would voluntarily let go of the rope, because, as a woman, she was used to giving up everything for her husband and kids, or for men in general, and was used to always making sacrifices with little in return.

As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping their hands
