Daybreak Rotary Club sells 'hallowed turf' of Reid Oval
for community fundraising

Reid Oval's "hallowed turf" is being dug up after countless games but it could become the ground for backyard cricket this summer or the new manicured front lawn that gets the neighbours talking.

Daybreak Rotary Club has received approval from Warrnambool City Council to sod and sell the oval's turf before excavators remove it as part of a $10 million oval redevelopment.

The club's community and service director Ian Harper said the club was trying to sell large patches of the turf for fundraising, but the offer might even draw some sentimental footballers and cricketers wanting to re-live memories at the ground.

"It's our MCG," Mr Harper said. "In some people's mind it may be the hallowed turf of Reid Oval where they performed a winning goal or a first century."

Volunteers are taking orders for the turf to fundraise in lieu of the coronavirus cancelling events like barbecues and food making this year.

Purchasers will pay $8 a square metre and have a choice to direct the money to either South West Healthcare or the Warrnambool Lookout project.

"It could be somebody who has purchased a new house, somebody who wants to landscape and do some work in their backyard, those sorts of things," Mr Harper said.

"Once the grass is gone it's gone. It enables our club members to do something to raise money and funds for local charities."

Reid Oval contractors Fairbrother have allowed the club to access the grass at certain times between construction schedules.

Mr Harper said the club would take orders for the turf until October 6 and then planned to sod the pre-purchased turf between October 8 and 12.

"We think it's an ideal time to do it," he said, adding the turf would be lost otherwise.

He said orders could be sent to secretary@daybreak.org.au, with a name, mobile number, area of grass wanted, and preferred pick-up date.

I've never understood why women love cats. Cats are independent, they don't listen, they don't come in when you call, they like to stay out all night, and when they're home they like to be left alone and sleep. In other words, every quality that women hate in a man, they love in a cat.

"Guess what I heard today?" a man says to his wife.

"What, hon?" she asks.

"The mailman has seduced every woman on our block but one."

"Huh," his wife says, "I bet it's that stuck-up Phyllis next-door."

During a performance for the high school drama class at the local theatre, a hole was cracked in the stage floor. Subsequent acts managed to avoid the damaged area until little Freddy, juggling bowling pins, accidentally stepped through the hole up to his knee. He apologized to the audience for his clumsiness. But a heckler in the back of the theatre shouted: "Don't worry, Freddy! It's just a stage you're going through!"

A man was sitting in a bar and noticed a group of people using sign language. He also noticed that the bartender was using sign language to speak to them.

When the bartender returned to him, the man asked how he had learned to use sign language. The bartender explained that these were regular customers and had taught him to speak in sign. The man thought that was great.

A few minutes later the man noticed that the people in the group were waving their hands around very wildly. The bartender looked over and signed: “Now cut that out! I warned you!” and threw the group out of the bar.

The man asked why he had done that and the bartender said: “If I told them once I told them 100 times – NO SINGING IN THE BAR!”
