Hello Daybreakers,

So the week has only been very busy with birthdays and not a lot else thank goodness. I’ve hit a milestone, and caught a bug, so I’m feeling very old this week. Because our are meetings are a little out of whack for the rest of the month I announced most of the April birthdays this week : Sherril the 8th, Cheryl the 12th, Sergio the 14th, I turned 60 on the 16th, Andrew birthday is on the 20th and Dianne’s is on the 26th.  Now, that’s a busy month.

The board met last Thursday with members of the new board, as Ian W was an apology, any distributions of funds was deferred until May. Mel has arranged with Steve and Watto to donate $1500.00 to Operation Cleft, and a further $1500.00 to End Trachoma. Mel’s contribution to Daybreak causes was duly noted, and we also congratulate him. We also congratulate him on having his travel independence returned this week.

Our speaker, Milee Collins, whose daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 6, told us of the lack of support amongst sufferers and their families. Milee moved with her family to Warrnambool due to a lack of medical support in Hawkesdale and started a family support group around 10 years ago. In the Warrnambool, Hamilton and Portland area there are over 70 families now supported by the group. Often Type 1 diabetes is genetic, but all too often is caused by a virus, which gives no warning and is often misdiagnosed, and misunderstood by families who are thrown into 24/7 care of a child with an illness that needs to be constantly monitored, and getting it wrong can be fatal. Most of us have been lucky to never have any experience of this situation. The support group relies on community donations for support, and while not asking directly our club for financial assistance, would greatly appreciate some input.

Next Week : 25th April – ANZAC Day : Cooked Breakfast at the Preston’s  $15.00

Following Week: Thursday 3rd May: Cooked @ Mid City combined club meeting $20.00

Bring a spare $5.00 – there will be an enticing raffle !  All for Aus Rotary Health.

Please send apologies through to Steve on 0457 926 657 by Midday on the Tuesday.

Tree Planting

Good afternoon all,

We had a successful morning planting 100 trees and 24 ground cover plants in the previously mulched batter on the southern boundary of the showgrounds.

We worked for about 2 hours digging holes, carting soil, planting trees and shrubs, fertilising and placing tree guards; then had a bbq lunch afterwards with other Committee members.

The prize for the best (Mountain) Goat goes to Peter S holding his shovel in the air with great gusto after he managed to climb the hill to plant a tree. See photo.

We are hoping the showground rabbits like eating grass better than small trees and plastic tree guards.

Many thanks to Mary, Watto, Peter S, Steve, Geoff, Andrew and Ree for a stirling effort.

At his speech to the 2017 International Assembly in January 2017, current RI President Ian Riseley, talking about environmental sustainability, asked every Rotary Club to plant at least one tree for each of its members sometime between the start of his Rotary year (July 2017) and Earth Day which is Sunday 22 April 2018. It was his hope that at least 1.2 million trees would be planted in this period.

Well our club has done its bit. We reached and exceeded this target with one day to spare!

Our tree planting team will meet and discuss what we think is an appropriate reward for our team, owed from other club members for whom we planted trees on their behalf.

Cheers

Glenn

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

A Moral Tale
Murphy showed up at Mass one Sunday and the priest almost fell down when he saw him. He'd never been to church in his life. After Mass, the priest caught up with him and said, "Murphy, I am so glad you decided to come  to Mass. What made you come?"
Murphy said, "I’ve got to be honest with you Father, a while back, I misplaced me hat and I really, really love that hat. I know that McGlynn had a hat just like mine and I knew he came to church every Sunday. I also knew that he had to take off his hat during Mass and figured he would leave it In the back of the church. So, I was going to leave after Communion and steal McGlynn's hat."
The priest said, "Well, Murphy, I notice that you didn't steal McGlynn's hat. What changed your mind?" Murphy replied, "Well, after I heard your sermon on the Ten Commandments I decided that I didn't need to steal  McGlynn's hat after all."
With a tear in his eye the priest gave Murphy a big smile and said; "After I talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' you decided you would rather do without your hat than burn in Hell, eh?
Murphy slowly shook his head. "No, Father, after ya talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery' I remembered where I left me hat."

A donkey had an IQ of 186. He had no friends at all though. Because even in the animal kingdom, nobody likes a smart-ass.

A group of junior-level executives were participating in a management training program. The seminar leader pounded home his point about the need to make decisions and take action on these decisions.

"For instance," he said, "if you had five frogs on a log and three of them decided to jump, how many frogs would you have left on the log?"

The answers from the group were unanimous: "Two."

"Wrong," replied the speaker, "there would still be five because there is a difference between deciding to jump and jumping."

Now that the metric system is in wide use all over the world, we can see why Americans have not adopted it:

A miss is as good as 1.6 kilometers.
Put your best .3 of a meter forward.
Spare the 5.03 meters and spoil the child.
Twenty-eight grams of prevention is worth 453 grams of cure.
Give a man 2.5 centimeters and he'll take 1.6 kilometers.
Peter Piper picked 8.8 liters of pickled peppers.

An Italian, a Frenchman and an Aussie were talking about screams of passion.
The Italian said:
"Last night I massaged my wife all over her body with the finest extra virgin olive oil, then we made passionate love and I made her scream, non stop for five minutes."

The Frenchman said:
"Last night I massaged my wife all over her body with special aphrodisiac oil from Provence and then we made passionate love. I made her scream for fifteen minutes straight."

The Aussie said:
That's nothing! Last night I massaged my wife ,y'know, all over her body with a special butter. I caressed her entire body with the butter and then made love. I made her scream for two long hours."

The Italian and Frenchman, astonished, asked, "Two full hours? ...wow! that's phenomenal. How did you do it to make her scream for two hours?"
The Aussie replied , "I wiped my hands on the curtains."

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!"
His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means?
The son replied, "I do know!"
"Okay," said his father. "What does the Bible mean?"
"That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied excitedly," It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.' (This one is my favourite)

A solider stationed in the South Pacific wrote to his wife in the States to please send him a harmonica to occupy his free time and keep his mind off of the local women. The wife complied and sent the best one she could find, along with several dozen lesson and music books.

Rotated back home, he rushed to their home and through the front door, “Oh darling” he gushed, “Come here… let me look at you… let me hold you! Let’s have a fine dinner out, then make love all night. I’ve missed your loving so much!”

The wife, keeping her distance, said, “All in good time lover. First, let’s hear you play that harmonica!”

The wife left a note on the fridge:

"It's not working, I can't take it anymore! Gone to stay with my mother."

I opened the fridge, the light came on, the beer was cold.

I wonder what the hell she is talking about?
