President's Chat
Steve's Chat 2
Despite the weather 17 Members were brave enough to attend this week’s meeting.  We had plenty of time for fellowship, and by the amount of chatter in the room all enjoyed the meeting.
We were lucky enough to have a guest speaker this week, Mary Ferguson spoke to us about a Math Club/Nurturing program that is being run at Warrnambool Primary School.

The program aims:

  • To support and mentor children who are falling behind their peers with respect to math’s skills and or math’s confidence, for them to regain their self -belief and positivity towards mathematics.
Values
  • Take small steps towards goals.
  • Attend to detail and effort.
  • Work as a team.
  • Be courageous.
  • Stay alert, open and curious.
  • Show generosity of spirit with skills, knowledge and time.
Structure
  • Runs every Thursday morning during term from 8-9 a.m.
  • Volunteers, six regular and committed volunteers.
    • Two are staff members, two are parents from our school community and two are ex teachers who are now retired.
  • We have ten children who attend regularly which means that the children get to work in a group of no more than two.
  • We offer fruit and hot chocolate and the atmosphere is welcoming and supportive.
  •  The room is usually abuzz with conversations and there is a great vibe and sense of community in the room.
  • Each child has their own work book and as there are teaching staff involved, we can set purposeful goals for each child and assist our volunteers with ideas, knowledge and resources.
  • Upon joining the group, each volunteer is given a handout re the basics of how we now teach math’s today.
  • The children have come to our group in a variety of ways. Sometimes teachers suggest children, sometimes it can be as a request from a parent and sometimes the children ask. However regardless of who suggests the child attends, we require the child to express their desire to come and commit.
  • Math’s Club is now in its third year and is much loved by those that attend.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

My wife and I had words,
But I didn't get to use mine.

Frustration is trying to find your glasses without your glasses.

The irony of life is that, by the time you're old enough to know your way around, you're not going anywhere.

A man is going skydiving for the first time.
After listening to the instructor for what seems like days, he is ready to go.
The man goes up in the airplane and waits to get to the proper altitude.

Excited, he jumps out of the airplane.
After a bit, he pulls the ripcord. Nothing happens.
He tries again. Still nothing.
He starts to panic but remembers his backup chute.
He pulls that cord. Nothing happens.

He frantically begins pulling both cords but to no avail.
Suddenly, he looks down and he can't believe his eyes.

Another man is in the air with him, but this guy is going up!
Just as the other guy passes by, the skydiver, by this time scared out of his wits, yells, "Hey, do you know anything about skydiving?"

The other guy yells back, "No! Do you know anything about gas stoves?"

Two cartons of yogurt walk into a bar. The bartender, who was a tub of cottage cheese, says to them, "We don't serve your kind in here."

One of the yogurt cartons says back to him, "Why not? We're cultured individuals."

Patient: My stomach is getting awfully big, doctor.

Doctor: You should diet.

Patient: Really? What color?

A lawyer was briefing his client, who was about to testify in his own defense.

"You must swear to tell the complete truth. Do you understand?"

The client replied that he did.

Then lawyer then asked, "Do you know what will happen if you don't tell the truth?"

The client looked back and said, "I imagine that our side will win."
