President's Chat
Newsletter 9
At this week’s meeting we welcomed 14 members to the meeting, with apologies received from Barry Moran.

President Peter welcomed our guest speaker, Mark Handby, Community Safety Coordinator with Moyne Shire Council.  Mark is also a volunteer with International Committee of the Red Cross.

Acting Sergeant Geoff invited Janey to recite the Invocation with Bob performing the Toast.

Guest Speaker Mark provided members with an insight into his volunteering with International Red Cross.  Mark’s first mission was to Sierra Leone for the Ebola response in 2015, working in an Ebola centre.  Sierra Leone has a population on 6 million, with the average life expectancy of 46 years.

Mark’s second mission came in late 2017, as part of the ICRC, where he travelled to Bangladesh to assist with the Cholera outbreak at the Refugee Camp known as ‘Cox’s Bazaar’.   While based at Cox’s Bazaar, not far from the Myanmar / Bangladeshi border, Mark’s main focus was the sourcing safe water and providing education around hygiene and water treatment.

At last count, more than 688,000 Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority group, had fled from Myanmar, escaping what the United Nations Human Rights Council has condemned as the “very likely commission of crimes against humanity” by Myanmar security forces.

‘Rotary 100 Years Project’
Glenn reported that the Board on Monday night discussed how our Club could commemorate the centenary of the establishment of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Warrnambool City Council is currently in the final design phase of a redevelopment plan for Lake Pertobe. It includes construction of a major new children's adventure playground and water water-play area, via contract.

The suggestion is that our Club contribute to the purchase of an item of playground equipment or park furniture that is included in the Council Plan. It was also suggested that Daybreak contact the other Warrnambool Clubs to ascertain their interest in joining with us in this project.  District 9780 is encouraging clubs to commemorate the centenary by carrying out joint projects.

Glenn will approach the Council and Cheryl will approach other clubs to further flesh out the viability of this project.

‘International / Literacy and Inter-Club Project with the RC of Warrnambool Central’ -
Club members have the opportunity to be involved in this very worthy project by donating soft toys and books (in English) for distribution to students at Arado Elementary School on the Island of Leyte in the Philippines.

To arrange the collection of your donations please contact Cheryl Bellman.

Local Project - ‘Back Pak for Kids Christmas Bag’
This year the group have decided to provide volunteers with a bag, available in ages from 0-17 years old.

The volunteer will add a book, a soft toy and an activity fitting to the age group.
Bags can be tagged prior to receiving or Jenni has indicated if you particularly wanted an age group she will provide this.   For members who choose to make a donation towards the purchase of gifts, this will be very acceptable.  Individual items will be accepted as well.

This is a wonderful opportunity for members to be involved in an extremely rewarding project.

It’s Quiz Time – The competition this week was very lively with Janey answering 4 questions taking her total to 6.  The results after Quiz # 2 are:

For the Centenary of Rotary in Australia, DG Philip and partner Judy have chosen the Indigenous Literacy Foundation as a project for the rotary clubs of District 9780 to support.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is dedicated to lifting the literacy levels in remote Indigenous communities, so all children across Australia have the same choices and opportunities –“Equity of Opportunity”.

“Reading Opens Doors” - Reading and writing are the basic skills everyone needs to help them learn and provide opportunities for their future. The ILF’s programs focus on ensuring access to quality resources including books in home languages, publishing community stories and empowering families to share reading and lead their own literacy future.

We as rotarians, by supporting the ILF in their important work, can open up opportunities to our First Nation People living in remote areas. Our support will help provide books and literacy programs to over 400 remote Indigenous communities across Australia, where they are needed most.

Just imagine if all of our rotary clubs in District 9780 worked together and contributed $500 or more each. That would lead to a substantial donation to this important foundation.

With your help we can make a real difference and “open opportunities” to many young Indigenous children.

If your club is able to and would like to help, please use the following bank details to make a donation. Rotary International District 9780, BSB 633000, Account Number: 164 290 835. Please put as your reference: ILF and your club name.

One day an Irishman, who had been stranded on a deserted island  for over 10 years, saw a speck on the horizon.
He thought to himself: "It's certainly not a ship."
As the speck got closer and closer, he began to rule out even the   possibilities of a small boat or a raft.

Suddenly there strode from the surf a figure clad in a black wet suit.   Putting aside the scuba tanks and mask and zipping down the top of  the wet suit stood a drop-dead gorgeous blonde!

She walked up to the stunned Irishman and said to   him: "Tell me, how long has it been since you've had a good cigar?"
"Ten years," replied the amazed Irishman.

With that, she reached over and unzipped a waterproof pocket on the left sleeve of her wet suit and pulled out a fresh package of cigars and a lighter.

He took a cigar, slowly lit it, and took a long drag.
"Faith and begorrah," said the castaway "that is so good! I'd almost forgotten how great a smoke can be!"

"And how long has it been since you've had a drop of good Bushmill's  Irish Whiskey?" asked the blonde.
Trembling, the castaway replied: "Ten years."
Hearing that, the blonde reached over to her right sleeve, unzipped a pocket there and removed a flask and handed it to him.

He opened the flask and took a long drink. "Tis nectar of the gods!" shouted the Irishman. "Tis truly fantastic!!!"
At this point the gorgeous blonde started to slowly unzip the long front of her wet suit, right down the middle. She looked at the trembling man and asked: "And how long has it been since you played around?"

With tears in his eyes, the Irishman fell to his knees and sobbed: "For the love of God, don’t tell me you’ve got golf clubs in there as well!”

The baby pigeon said, "I can't make it; I'll get too tired."

His mother said, "Don't worry; I'll tie a piece of string to one of your legs and the other end to mine."

The baby started to cry.

"What's wrong?" said the mother.

"I don't want to be pigeon towed!"
